He destroyed his voice on tour in Australia in 1980 or the earliy 80's anyway.
Never got it back and now he just kind of bellows. Most of his career success came after his voice was gone. Imagine that.

Elton's singing greatly improved after vocal training and coaching in the early 80's. After very ambitious touring, Elton stopped hitting some falsetto notes - high D sharp march 4th 86. Later, in a span of 23 days, the timbre clearly began changing. It completely changed in a matter of weeks. Late august 86. It happened in a matter of weeks and never returned to normal. The vocal surgery was in 87 and is not the cause of the change.
