The Beatles never really have a "turning point", it was actually a much smoother progression from one era to the other and everything that is revolutionary in one album can be found in small doses in the previous

That being said, Rubber Soul. It was the first album go fully with the idea that every song was its own stylistic thing, had no covers (except A Hard Day's Night), and also was the first time that the world of "adult" music and critics (jazz, classical music, etc) of the times noticed that The Beatles and pop music in general was something musically significant to be analysed and talked about

I think it's Help, they finally were writing top tier songs like Help!, Ticket To Ride, I've Just Seen a Face, Yesterday, etc... when nothing before reached that level

Folk wasn't really pop music, it was a different branch.

The Beatles, along with rock n roll and pop music, were really considered "teenager's music" at the times, a product for the kids (like rock n roll, rhythm and blues...) or casual listeners (easy listening, novelty songs, doowoop, etc), and generally ignored by the serious, adult society. Those two worlds were VERY divided.

Rubber Soul was really the one where serious critics and music started to look towards pop music and notice that there were some interesting things there, and The Beatles were basically the band at the forefront of that idea, especially when Leonard Bernstein's started praising and analysing their music on TV.

It's Help! because that one has Yesterday on it, and that was the real turning point. The Beatles always considered themselves to be a rock band, until that song became their biggest hit ever. It proved to them that not only could they expand and write songs that weren't always fast pop hits (John wanted Help! to be a slower ballad type song, but they sped it up to make it a hit, just like with Please Please Me) but it also proved that they could write songs about deeper things, like heartbreak and loss, and people would still want to listen to them.

This is also right. Rubber Soul was when they realized in full the ideas that were born with yesterday. Every song was supposed to be a potential hit, a new musical idea that sounds nothing like the previous song, and with no throwaways to pad out the album.

I don't agree that there's no meh songs on it tho. I still think they wrote some duds to pad that one out. But they were pressured by the record company to get it done in time for Christmas. What can you do? Still good.

I actually like that one. I don't mind it when McCartney is corny (though I can't stand Maxwell's.) Drive My Car was definitely a song that desperately needed John's writing help though, it would have sucked as a solo Paul joint. And even if you don't like the lyrics, it just sounds good. Peak bass and guitar tone. Sounds way better in mono imo, like nearly every Beatles album that isn't named The Beatles.

well then, the filler songs might be "what goes on", "im looking thru you" and "run for your life" ?

I'm a country fan, so I like What Goes On. Lovely guitar sound on it, and it's fun hearing the Beatles harmonize behind Ringo. Not sure why you don't like I'm Looking Through You. Not a Paul fan? Run For Your Life is fine imo. Not the best song on there, the lyrics are stock, but I think John's vocals are good. I'd say both it and What Goes On are enjoyable filler.

I'm not a fan of Harrison's songs on Rubber Soul. He sounds half asleep as he's singing them, like his heart wasn't in it for those sessions. He might've been nervous; I don't think John, Paul, or George Martin thought he was any good at writing yet. Think For Yourself sounds good (dat organ) but the vocals on the chorus are weak. I think the same applies to the bridge during If I Needed Someone. His voice sounds weak, and Harrison is a much better solo singer than that. The Hollies covered that one and did a much better job imo.

So, really, to answer you, I'd consider:
>Think For Yourself
>What Goes On
>If I Needed Someone
>Run For Your Life
to be filler.
