Listening to the Blanton-Webster compilation and it's incredible how consistently engaging and innovative this stuff is throughout the ~4 hour runtime.

Despite boasting knowledge about theory. Why most Jazzfags don't point out the jazz influence in a lot of music but only in blatant “jazz pieces” that are mostly some sax solo.
>>127759637
some youtube theoryfags already do this, but the real answer is that non-jazz listeners constantly overstate the jazz influence in anything constantly. it would be like going from a goldmine to a dry pit in the desert
>>127759719
I don't think it's overstated. Jazz created modern music >conceptual album
Jazz >Modern bands
Jazz >Pop music
is still rooted in jazz >contemporary dance
Jazz >Musicals
Jazz
Because jazz is a hodgepodge of different cultural expressions and was the pop music of the first half of the 20th century. We feel the influence of the genre to this day.

Jazz didn't invent the idea of concept albums. The idea that music exists to convey a story is really, really, really old. In classical music, it's normally called "program music", but the reality is that it's far older. Like for example, The Iliad was originally told in poetry song. The tradition of ballad music existing as a form of storytelling has likely existed long before writing existed.

Pop music is barely rooted in jazz, pseud. Even pop artists who like and use jazz on occasion like Radiohead or Bjork only ever show it in a couple songs, you're acting like it's all over the place. Probably because you think 7th chords = jazz or some similar ignorant, reductive nonsense

I like Shabaka Hutchings' different bands but I'm sure it's the kind of thing people in these threads would hate on since it is very trendy and influenced by stuff like Dub Reggae and Afrobeat. If you're interested check out the albums Wisodm of Elders, Melt Yourself Down, and Your Queen Is a Reptile.

If we're talking in terms of the modern form of a concept album as a suite of songs recorded in studio for a commercial package then the first one is clearly Dust Bowl Ballads, which as you've said is in the ballad tradition of storytelling.
>>127771718
you're talking out of your ass. the general consensus is that miles consistently outblows trane on the prestige dates. john coltrane only really came into his own circa 1957.
>>127773873
what do you mean which ones? there were only two or three recording sessions with the first quintet for prestige records. in 1955 and 1956. those ones.

Trying to get into jazz, any recommendations? Picrel is what I've listened to so far. Seems like Miles isn't liked here, so do please recommend any others that are good for new listeners.

Depends what you're looking for, I don't think there is one way to get into jazz
I got into it with the meme 60s albums like a love supreme and black saint and the sinner lady. These are nice in that they're a bit more out there and attention grabbing, but not as difficult as some really harsh and free flowing free jazz records.

I usually just smoke a bowl or have some bourbon while I listen in my headphones. Sometimes I read stuff about the artist or the recording session while I listen or play video games, but mostly I just chill and listen.
>>127781390
might be too intimating for a beginner, but the best part about jazz is reading lineups for each album and recognizing names and playing styles over time. you can also dig into the discography of a musician you enjoy. it's common for these workhorses to have dozens of albums they've played on
reading the lineup on discogs or wikipedia is a good habit to get into imo

early in the morning when you are easily triggered emotionally. its like that for me anyways. first time i heard this i almost started crying when the trumpet player took his second chorus https://youtu.be/qzZOiVtsJiI its not like that later in the day for me
>>127783138 >The less you already “know about” miles the clearer you can hear his music
Actually based advice. I don't know why jazz beginners these days are obsessed with facts and knowledge and trivia, just stfu and enjoy an album, it's not that complicated
>>127780244
I just never had similar taste to Rolling Stone when it comes to jazz. Sometimes their reviews read as if the reviewer doesn't even enjoy jazz. Fantano's jazz videos are more genuine.
>>127784094
I agree, but he actually comes off like he enjoys the music and isn't just trying to sound formal for the sake of the hustle >>127784137
oh i see someone feels exposed lol
>>127796122
listen to him playing with jacob collier theres such a clear contrast between them and the contrast doesnt necessarily add to the music . https://youtu.be/KiijRNeFFxs
you cant tell me that chris thile isnt an incredible singer
