For me, it's John Wesley Harding (mono version). Although I almost never listen to his studio albums and just craft my own playlists out of the bootleg series volumes

same, love that album so much. the simple instrumentation combined with the clean surrealistic lyricism makes for a powerful combination. I love The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest the most

For me it's St. Augustine. Lowkey one of the most devastating tunes in his discography.

It's a tough toss-up between the basement tapes and another self portrait for me. He sounds like a weary but warm 1000 year old man on those albums. I love when he's clearly having a good time with those old timey covers. He just sounds so great here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73GcOrj9eGQ
John wesley harding is tremendous as well. His most mystical album, which gets even more fascinating considering the fact that it came out after he survived that ''motorcycle accident'' (which i still think was either a failed hit or a made up story so he could go into hiding, especially after his buddy richard farina got killed) and his disillusionment with the entire sociopolitical art world. The lyrics are gorgeous.
