jay-z's unplugged album, and a lot of southern rap as well as later rap, no limit cash money etc. uses synths which had something to do with sampling laws that were made at some time in the 90s

something like 30%-40% of rap songs don't use sampling, it's not rare but if you're not interested in hip hop or just getting into it, maybe it's rare to you
