Do you guys think extreme metal can ever make a comeback in popularity?

Half of what I listen to is extreme metal, and I'm kind of wondering if I'm living in the same world as you guys. This is the first time extreme metal bands are literal rockstars - Gojira, Knocked Loose, Behemoth, Lorna Shore, Meshuggah, Opeth - these are some of the biggest bands in the world right now, and I don't think that's ever really been true in the past. I'm not big on most of the bands I just listed, but the level of visibility extreme metal has right now is insane. Mopey online emo kids are identifying with Mayhem and Lifelover right now. Rock may be dying out of the mainstream, and indie (basically the other half of what I listen to) has become somewhat redundant, but the fracturing of mainstream media has actually been amazing for metal.

Even as an underground act in the early 1990s, the Norwegian black metal scene influenced many genres within metal and even other totally different music styles that helped shape new forms of sound. I don't think it ever will but there are some artists like Weeping moon who are doing some interesting records.

I listen to accessible and extreme music, I think it's great to have a contrast of emotions in music.

But not everybody likes it though, Opeth for example faced lots of criticism when they went softer.

death metal was also semi-popular in the early 90s when grunge made people pay attention to underground rock in general

I think it is such an injustice to say tha grunge killed mainstream rock, it was the media and even the collective of rock that as a whole decided to become so pleasing and aesthetical and that whole arena thing of the 80s, "ah but the money", "ah but if you were there" yeah man sure, ut in 70s it wasn't like that, and there was no mtv either.

There are big underground scenes still, but it'd be really cool to see something as big as today's pop artists, at least one death metal band being that popular would be awesome.

It was never very popular. The music is just too abrasive. The most exposure it got was probably in the media coverage in nordic countries following the insane shit black metal bands were doing there in the 90s. Also tangential, but most deathcore kinda sucks. People who listen to it should do themselves a favor and listen to brutal death metal instead. It shares many of the same elements, but without the faggy 21st century metalcore ones.
>>128147919
None of those bands are really big. Compare them to the amount of plays rappers and pop stars get, and it's orders of magnitude less.

You say this but death metal bands were playing on MTV in the 1990s and in some countries, weaker variants of death metal like melodeath played on radiostations throughout the 90s and 2000s.

There was always "those 12-15 year olds" who listened to some random melodeath or deathcore band in every school across most of the West.

>death metal bands were playing on MTV
Those instances were almost exclusively limited to metal-oriented TV programs like Headbangers Ball. Still nowhere near mainstream. I think they might have showed a Death music video on Beavis and Butt-Head once, but that was it when it comes to death metal escaping into non-metal-specific environments. That being said, thrash metal falls under the umbrella of extreme metal, and Metallica went uber mainstream. Admittedly it was mostly because of the black album, which wasn't thrash, but a lot of normies took a liking to their thrash stuff after discovering them through their non-thrash music.

The "extreme metal" that was once truly popular wasn't really extreme metal, I'm talking about shit like Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, Pantera.

Extreme metal bands that are more well known are just that, famous but not mainstream where they have the same spotlight as more "normie music"

I've listened to those bands, and slipknot seemed noticeably heavier to me than the other 2 bands. Well, aside from a few songs from pantera, like suicide note part 2.

There is definitely heavier bands out there, but i don't get why people would say that slipknot is not extreme. It might be due to how chaotic their songs get or the production, but it was harder for me to get used to than some of the death/black metal bands ive heard.

Words have meaning. "Extreme metal" refers to thrash, death, black, variants thereof. It does not refer to numetal, and especially not to numetal that tamed itself for fame.

I'm a Hayleyfag / stan but yeah this is poseur behavior. She doesnt know much about Black Metal or anything like that, to be fair "Death Core" also has done the corpse paint shit

Anyway the make up aint bad Hayley but you missed up the white face base so it looks like war paint, like you are a ghost, already dead.

BM make up is fairly easy to do all things considered. She should do a Katrina make up that shit is actually aesthetic and represents death which is a theme of hers nowadays i guess cuz she be wanting to off herself and depression and all that shit that she will end up overcoming
