note that a lot of what he's doing isn't special except to rock/pop. jazz musicians do this sort of thing all the time, especially guys like trane whom holdsworth worshipped. he just discovered these techniques intuitively and gives them ad hoc names, but his schematic approach to the fretboard is something that musicians have been doing for generations
