But barring military marches, Western music was almost never structured around drumming.
The drum kit as we know it was an African-American phenomenon. The idea of putting an emphasis on drums to drive the rhythm came out African slave circles and evolved into modern genres in New Orleans. The traditional metal instrument line-up (drum kit, bass and guitar) is literally rooted in what nogs were doing in New Orleans.
