What is the point of listening to new music that hasn't been pre-approved by history as good music? I can just listen to music from 30 years ago and before that is guaranteed to be good and not waste my time on something that might be bad.

Might be good too. I don’t think this is very complicated, it’s half full it half empty or at fifty percent capacity and if it was empty it should be half full and if it was full it should be half empty, it ought to be not should

The word "gem" implies a high value ascribed by society for the particular mineral: If it's only hidden, but doesn't sell for a lot at the jewelery store, it's not a gem, but a fucking rock.
The notion of "discovering" music which will have long-lasting acclaim in society is ridiculous; Either the music is of value, then more people than you have already established its worth long before your "discovery", or you have indeed discovered it first, then the odds of it having any worth for society are infinitesimal. If the worth is only for you individually, then its value is sentimental.
tl;dr: There are no hidden gems. There are gems and rocks and their discovery does not alter their (intrinsic and predetermined) worth.

I am only able to enjoy stuff that other people tell me to.
Now what? You're gonna twist this into something negative or far removed from your own behavior?
Laughable.

People told me that Led Zeppelin was good so I listened to them and it was shit. Now what?

There is a point, which OP made and which has been successfully defended in this thread: There is no virtue in listening to new music that hasn't been pre-approved by history as good music.

>anon has never found a cool rock
you need to get out more

the point is listening to people who are alive at same time as you are
besides if you can't tell it's shit or good in 4 bars you've got a taste problem; waiting 30 years won't help you

This. This also why you listen to the whole album and not only the singles. Singles or popular picks are just normie favorites, the real gems might be the not so popular tracks.

Finding new stuff that you love that other people haven't even heard of is a very humbling experience. You want to talk to everyone about it but there's nobody to talk to about it.
