The Essential Ride '63-'67 [Columbia/Legacy, 1995]
Organized by a Mennonite conscientious objector and fronted by an omniverous pop showman, this was the one American garage band whose recorded output justified the ensuing mythos. Where here-and-gone hitmakers like the Standells and the Count Five were never as good as their best songs, and wild Northwest rivals like the Sonics and the Wailers never even had best songs, these guys sunk their chops into professional smashes ("Hungry," "Kicks") until they figured out how to write them ("Ups and Downs," "Him or Me--What's It Gonna Be"). And long before that, they figured out how to rock out, beating the Kingsmen to "Louie Louie" and daring the previously unreleasable frat-orgy classic "Crisco Party/Walking the Dog." Eventually, they also figured out how to wimp out. But unlike their vinyl best-of, this CD is programmed to cut out first. A-

An underrated group nowadays but their outfits didn't hold up well and turned them into a kind of meme and they were never really accepted by the "hip" rock tastemakers at RSM and whatnot.

>didn't write many of their own songs
>never quite had a definitive song to remember them by
>remained a singles band as rock was shifting to albums
>the original lineup disbanded after 1966 and after that they had a revolving door menagerie of guitarists, bassists, and drummers
>also after 66 the actual band didn't even play on the records anymore, it was mostly Mark Lindsay+the Wrecking Crew
>their only #1 hit was a painfully bad meme song which they also didn't write
>Paul Revere then later turned them into a corny oldies/family rock act that played casinos and county fairs
Those were among the main reasons the Raiders didn't reach a level of "cool" respectability. You could say in many ways they were a band that never got out of a 50s notion of rock-and-roll and failed to adapt to the emerging era of AOR, concept rock, having politics and a message, etc.

they were signed by CBS in 1963 and initially did heavy noise rock R&B covers. however they didn't get any promotion or radio play until 65, after Mitch Miller had left CBS. their live shows were pretty raw, it was said that the band would remove their Revolutionary War costumes onstage and strip down to their skivvies possibly even less.

that was the problem. Gen X would see the outfits and go are you kidding me? just not as cool as Morrison, Hendrix, or the Stones' tongue logo.

I never noticed the shade cuckgau throws towards The Sonics in this one.
