I love videogame music, but most fans of it badly need to expose themselves to the best work of the first-rank masters before they act as if it's on the level of said art. Videogame music wouldn't even exist without the efforts of men such as Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and Wagner.

Videogame music is like film score where a huge part of the appeal relies on having it played in the context of something. It can be good but without the context it doesn't usually mean much to whoever is hearing it. That said the Command and Conquer games have really cool soundtracks

Some album-obsessed people often create polemic claiming their medium to consume music is the best or truest. To them, a pop slop album has more value than a videogame soundtrack simply for being an album. They are so indoctrinated by marketing to buy this type of product that they can't consider appreciating art in any other way.

They're music. The context in which they were composed for will of course heighten the experience when listening to them but the best thing about that is the memories/associations you form with a certain piece which of course isn't any different from what we'd consider normal music. Those who hold it in the highest regard ironically devalue it however.

Sure, but the problem with soundtracks is that they aren't structured well as albums. There's no pacing, no progression, no climax, no throughline, no structure. Listening to them feels like listening to mixtapes or playlists. Because of that I don't think most soundtracks can truly be great as albums.
