The truth is, Americans have always loved violence and violent media like action movies. The biggest consumers of rap music in the 90s were white suburban kids who were certainly not gangbanging. Far from being a conspiracy, 9/11 is the main reason rap turned to shit. In the late 90s and into the 2000s you saw a lot of conscious lyrical-miracle rap in the mainstream. Mos Def, Common, and Talib Kweli were played all the time on MTV and mainstream rap radio. You even saw a Black Power revival earlier in the 90s that kept going throughout the decade. Neo Soul a counterpart to this and it was also everywhere in the late 90s/early 2000s and really emphasized Afrocentrism and shit.

Then, after 9/11, conscious rap was too "dangerous" due to the US now engaged in imperialist war and implementing the Patriot Act. Those lyrical miracle rappers were de facto blackballed and hip hop became dominated by mindless garbage like crunk and songs about money and flexing. Many rappers from the 90s who were deeply involved in 5%ers and the NOI stopped rapping about that stuff around this time too.

The vast majority of hip hop producers are autistic. I'm dead serious. We all know Kanye is a full-blown autist but I'm certain most other hip hop producers are as well.

Why? Because being a producer in this genre requires you have an encyclopedia brain full of knowledge of records that you're sampling. You have to be very precise when both digging for records to sample and sorting out which elements of a song to sample. That takes super brainpower than only an Asperger's brain possesses. The actual beats themselves are made through electronics like MPCs and Boss samplers, which Aspie nerds usually excel in using.

after losing interest in the genre once it began to stagnate after covid and having spent the last few years listening to stuff like melanie martinez and marina, i find it hard to relate to all the violence and misogyny in rap. i always had a problem with it, but i had a higher tolerance to where i could still enjoy a song like who i smoke or the race. if those came out today i wouldn't enjoy them. i think the promotion of misogyny and violence in rap is problematic to say the least. i think i would listen to rap again if it starts to get interesting again, but i used to idolize rappers in a way that i won't be able to again. i think this relates to the fact that rap is more of a soap opera than other genres. there's a lot more collaboration and self referentialism inherent to the genre to where it veers into reality show voyeurism on the part of the audience where the occurrences outside of the music are equally as or more important than the music itself. and being the blackest relevant genre, young mixed people such as myself gravitate toward it to feel more authentic in our black identity, and being a young middle class liberal yadda yadda yadda i was aware of the socioeconimic factors cia reagan crack shit that goes into modern rap lyrics so i could let it slide because it's black art but now that i'm more secure in my racial identity i can call a spade a spade and recognize that most rappers that glorify misogyny and violence are bad people. i just toked an entire doobie of reefer. strangely i only started smoking weed once i stopped listening to rap.
