Maybe this is some point of reference for what moderately successful musicians make.
I had dinner with a lead guitarist and drummer for a band that had a big hit in the early 70's (top 5 in US). The drummer is pulling $80k per year for playing with the band. Sometimes these guys pick up royalties for projects they work on too.
I also met a bassist for a much bigger artist from the 80's and I don't know what he makes, but he has made enough to have some rental properties in the LA area.
One thing these guys do get is a whole lot of pussy. If you're not in it for the pussy then I don't really know why someone would want to be a musician for a living.
None of these guys are original band member btw.

not that anon but it wasn't that far off from that, lot of blog era indie bands blew up pretty big just from sending mp3s around to blogs. In the 90s you had to bust your ass touring the US forever to reach the kind of audiences that blog bands could reach overnight from like, nomodestbear posting your song. It was probably the most democratized era ever as far as music press went, it wasn't that way before blog era and it hasnt been that way sense.

There was definitely a specific audience that was looking for music through blogs though, but I suppose it is an audience. I don't think the situation is very different against streaming services in the modern age, except there isn't one audience anymore. You just have a ton of people in their own niches, and so its a bit harder to break outside of a niche.

Tons of rich girls are rejected from the industry because they have no talent. Rebecca Black is the best example of this. And it's not like Gaga's family were multi millionaires, they were well off, but not rich like Taylor's family who literally bought a recording studio for her when she was starting out and bought the record label who put up her first album, or Beyonce's family who paid off the other two singers in Destiny's Child to sing worse than Beyonce intentionally and put her in the spotlight during all live performances. There's a reason why Gaga spent 4 years performing in dive bars and parking lots before she made it big, her dad didn't have fuck you levels of money.

Yes, because she's talented. If she wasn't no amount of money would have made her a success. That's the point I'm making.

Lana Del Taco becoming as big as she did for a while was mind boggling. She cannot sing to save her life, every single live performance she's ever had has been god awful, like even current tiktok singers are better than her. I give her props for not lip syncing I guess, but at least Britney who also could not sing at least focused on her dancing and performance to make up for it. Her Cochella performance a few years ago was so embarrassing that she spent all year on damage control. She also gave rise to the modern femcel archetype which is thankfully dead by now, but for years women everyone thought it was cool to mope around, exaggerate how depressed they were and complain about everything more than they usually do.

I think Chris's real point was that if you don't make your own scenes, champion your own art, and do-it-yourself, all that will be left is rich people who don't actually give a fuck about music and just treat it as something to pass their time. Music fans willingly gave up their autonomy out of laziness. See: this board.

Everybody Knows [MCA, 1996]
Tricia had a dream, and by 1985 she was in Nashville pursuing it--studying "music business," as her bio says, at Belmont College. An internship and some demo singing later, she had signed with MCA, where she now epitomizes the blandness of today's quality country. Not that she's bad or anything. Her voice is big and precise, and she ends up with a good song or two on every album--including this one, where she doesn't ruin strong titles by Kevin Welch and Steve Goodman and brings off a terrific Matraca Berg line about chocolate and magazines. But if songwriters love her so much, it must be because she brings nothing to the song but what they put there. The same cannot be said of Willie Nelson, George Jones, Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks--even Shania Twain. In pop music, good taste isn't timeless. It's boring. B

00s indie, though referential, was the last time bands felt obliged to do more than merely copy the past, some great songwriters and innovations came out of that period, which you cannot really say for the 10s and certainly not the 20s. In 2025 the big buzz band is awarded the hype worthy compliment of sounding like a 00s indie band,
