Newfag here. I live in rural Texas, a few miles away from town, and want to start riding a bicycle to town. Maybe I'm just a coward, but any advice to stay safe? Most of it looks like picrel and the speed limit for cars is 70mph for most of it. There's a few miles where there are no backroads to avoid this. Is it safe to ride on the shoulder? I have a helmet and a high vis vest, is that enough?

The sun is probably going to be your biggest concern, a lengthy trip is going to turn miserable if you get partway and start overheating. Even if you think you're fine, sunburn and the effects of long-term exposure can really fuck you. Worse still, throw a chain or get a flat and you could be fucked with an hours long hike. Extra danger if you've got bad/no cell reception. Not sure if wildlife is any concern, probably not but still a possibility.

no state highway or non Eisenhower Interstate is going to have a 70 mph speed limit. GTFO with this larp or drop a pin. I ride rural america thousands of miles a year. Suck eggs, 15 minute city shut-in. Pic rel is where you probably think Indians sleep because everything you believe about the USA you get from TV and memes.

It's funny that you picked that road picture as some sucky road to ride but I'd love to ride a ribbon road with a 6 ft well maintained flat shoulder that just goes straight on until morning.

I know this sounds revolutionary but the way you ride your bike on the road is by riding your bike on the road. Throw a bright jersey on and a blinker on your seat tube and allez su bici bitches

Heat's not too bad this time of year, I'm used to gardening in it. I do have a portable pump, but how likely is it for a chain to get fucked?

>I ride rural america thousands of miles a year
Every state is different. Have you ever been to Texas? 70 is default on highways here.
https://texas.public.law/statutes/tex._transp._code_section_545.352
Main road I'll be on is a Farm-To-Market road, as the law mentions.

I probably am just overthinking it, just paranoid since it's not common out here.

relax man

OP if your highway has nice big paved shoulders like that, you'll have plenty of room between you and the cars. Shit's noisy (esp transport trucks) but you'll get used to it. It'll feel sketchy the first time but just do it more than once. You don't need hi vis, throw a little red clip light on if you're going out at night but if you're nervous just stick to daytime for now. eZ peaZ

Remember--share the road. Let people pass (if there's not already a generous shoulder) and you'll find that people will be far more forgiving and friendly.

you haven't biked much near cars if you think that works. some people are courteous and appreciate it and will give you space but a large amount of people (especially SUV and pickup drivers) will see your existence as a threat to them and will pass you inches away regardless of what you do, so taking the lane if you are in a low speed high traffic area is kind of the best solution if you don't want the risk of getting clipped

Went for it today, only got a bit over mile out before I turned around. I had fun downhill and in flat spots, but even on the highest gear any slight elevation was worse than walking. Bike is an old Walmart bike. I assumed rust was only cosmetic, but I'm probably retarded for that. I can't afford a new one, would replacing the chain or something make it easier? If not I'll just keep going next time, it's still better than sitting around at home.

3 things to check:

lift up the rear wheel and spin it. Check if your break is not touching the rim. If it makes any noise or stopping somewhat quickly, fix it. Repeat for front wheel.

check your tire pressure, it should be around 4 or 5 bars (58/72psi).

your chain looks dead, i'd suggest changing it.

if you're going to ride a lot on roads, you can get slick tires for your mtb wheels. you will immediately notice going faster for less effort.
noobs almost always have the saddle height wrong. you want almost full leg extension with a slight knee bend so you don't destroy your knees when pedal is all the way down. you will not be able to put your feet down when stopped unless you lean over onto one foot or dismount. incorrect height can cause pain, it also saps your energy and power. it would be much more tiring to walk with your knees constantly bent, right? that's why nobody does it.
for hills you probably want to be in the middle ring up front, but you can use the little one on killer hills. on the wheel, it's the opposite: the big ones are easy and the small ones are hard but fast.
get rid of that chain. if you do it yourself you need to size it to your drivetrain with a chain tool even if it has a quick link. look up how to size it or ask us.
ass hurting is normal at first. the tissue over your ass bones needs to break in. your weight is transferred through the hip bone ends not the ass so if your saddle is the wrong size for your bone support, that can be a problem, too. there are methods to measure these things. but even with the correct size, a new rider's ass will be tender for a while.
that bike is pretty low quality but if the brakes and shifting are ok, change the chain and ride. just don't sink any money into repairs. in most used markets, you can get something decent/good for the cost of major repairs. (assuming the used bike doesn't need major repairs itself - - ask us)

He's missing the helmet that has a blinky bar on the back of it, the pool noodle, and the laser beam that paints a "you must be this far away" line on the road

yeah i'm an inconsiderate asshole for wanting to not get clipped and possibly killed retard. drivers don't pass any courtesy to me so I have no reason to do it to them, taking the lane if there isn't much space is protecting yourself, if there's a lot of space sure move over.

that can be fixed for sure, but it's not worth it. I think a new chain would be the same cost as that bike, it's an actual piece of garbage. go check fb marketplace for road or hybrid bikes from brands like specialized, trek, giant, bianchi, kuwahara, etc. get something <10 years old and you should totally be able to find something less than $150, if you can't save up that amount then i'll assume you are homeless, if you are homeless then go steal a bike, but if you truly cannot, wash the chain and gears thoroughly and reapply bike chain oil to them, and see if there is a twisty thing like on this picture and twist it all the way in then slowly twist it out until shifting works better

You're not going to get "clipped" and "possibly killed" if you just move over onto the shoulder for 10 seconds to let a line of traffic pass you. This is just the usual excuses that cyclists make to be a problem.

Tractors and other orange-triangle vehicles do the same, and they'll move back onto the road when traffic has passed. Besides, do you want to be the one with one car constantly at your back, or let it pass and ride free?

do not see carbon monoxide

The blue cyclist is safer riding the opposite direction to avoid the gassing. The gas comes out when the gas chamber is moving (especially up hill)

why do you keep saying "the road"?

Hitler's high ways were never just roads they were logistics for genocide.
