I've never flown to the states before, so I never understood this meme. How are they different to the normal airport security in every other country? I always hear about people bitching about them in particular.

First it probably was 9/11 paranoia that lead to bureaucratic power being given away.
Then the issue got compounded because anytime there's authority to be had that extends beyond due process it attracts creeps that get off on it, cementing the problem.

it's kind of an outdated meme, the incompetent/power tripping TSA stereotype was a thing early on but they got that under control by the late 2000s and they're basically like the DMV now - not renowned for their sunny dispositions but frequent travelers and TSA have reached a kind of wary tolerance for one another

the guys you need to worry about are the customs and immigration authorities since they were recently given a memorandum to be the biggest assholes humanly possible and make everyone not want to travel to the US anymore, and they seem to be taking that mandate seriously

It really depends on the airport. The Houston airport TSA will rifle through your stuff, try to confiscate ANYTHING that they think is bad, and are extremely rude. In comparison, Tampa and Knoxville TSA are much more chill

they pay colored people to make-believe security while the camera systems with facial recognition and behavior AI in the line do all the work.

There was a time where they hired ex convicts to shove their finger up your ass. Don't know what they do now but American airports have been a nightmare since Israel did 9/11.

Good move to take serial gropers and pickpockets off the streets, and give them a job with 24/7 surveillance so they can satisfy their urges safely.

Be aware that they tightened up the rules. You can now only carry one handgun plus two spare loaded magazines on your person.

actually if you're an oppressed white south african you are allowed one light machine gun, one centerfire autoloading rifle, one smg, two handguns (a revolver and an autoloader), and one of either a grenade launcher or a crate of antipersonnel mines, and obviously as many rimfires as you want because those technically aren't considered firearms

The TSA is what happens when the state nationalizes airport security. All the problem of how government works (or doesn't work), etc.
