When did cargo bikes go from being a crusty, get-it-done, no-nonsense niche improvised delivery tool for reasonable humans, to being the single most punchable conspicuous consumption fashion accessory in the history of wheels?

Also, cargo bikes hate thread, and yes I took my meds thanks for the reminder though

the point where it actually gets funny is when you pass by them hauling 10 times the weight and volume of what they got in their ebikes by the magic of bungee cords and carry bags alone.
The fact that you only ever see those types once you enter a town strongly implies those fags don't even actually ever use their BSOs but only ride them around town a little bit doesn't make them appear any better either.
To. summarize: They are motorists. Most even have their cargo-bike motorized. All of them are motorists.

OP is right tho.
The whole problem we're seeing as of late, which is so reminiscent of division, has a very simple root cause: 'Bicycle' being missattributed.
It is a psy-op, conducted by the motorist, to muddy the waters regarding what a bicycle is and what is not. The central motivation behind this is so that they get to conduct false flag operations as 'cyclists' like breaking the law the same as they do when they are using their otherotorvehicles an also so that they get to normalize operating motorvehicles outside of the bounds of the motorist inclusion zone and even in spaces explicitly protected from the motorist. That is why they will take a moped, convince politics, media and lawmakers that it was in fact 'a bicycle' only to then use it to endanger others, be obnoxious, break every law there is and invade pedestrian spaces.
Just think about it: You never see a cyclist blow a red light, ride on the sideawalk or throigh pedestrian zones. Meanwhile you never see the motorists on their e-bike on the road, let alone outside town, you'll only ever see them on the sidewalk, in pedestrian zones and crossing the road at pedestrian crossings.
So if what OP is vaguely complaining about feels like 'division': It is not. the opposite is the case. The motorist, acting on bad motives, tries to LARP as cyclist. And OP is calling it out.

I mean, I get being annoyed at suburban soccer moms pretending to be having fun while just using their bike as a really poor hauler for their children, but cargo bikes still have legitimate uses and make for good delivery vehicles and such, sounds like you're less annoyed at cargo bikes and more just annoyed at suburban soccer moms (and you're not alone)

Not even if it was redundant? Why do you trust a stem, fork crown or blades, steerer? Handlebars?
IMO those steerer / fork failure scenarios are the most terrifying imaginations when it comes to cycling but at the same time you just end up contempt or perhaps even trusting after you went for hundrets of thousands of kilometers without it ever happening. I mean think about it: You saw everything happening, Murphys law in action, and while you saw videos, pics and heard stories: You never saw this thing happening (well ok survivor bias I give people that).
Takeaway: The idea was probably just as unpleasant for any of the pioneers of cycling as it is to us today and as a result those things are traditionally way overbuilt.

As I've argued:
I don't see how this induces any more concern than the concept of a conventional fork itself.
Also what if the linkage was redundant, would that make you less worried?
A car's steering is literally the same construction. It's not convincing how the ball joint would fail. It's a solid honk of heat treated quality steel. On motorvehicle you usually find the bar bent. The joint always fails the same: Rubber boor fails. Water and grime find their way in. Wear starts. The joint gets loose and klunky, as a result the steering becomes very sketchy, vague, shimmies... which is when people feel very motivated to just swap the joint out. At the same time this is still lightyears away from having the linkage physically detach.
The only thing I would like to see here is a castelated nut. I don't trust the nyloc as much. But it should be noted that thanks to the taper the ball joint remains attached even without the nut and takes considerable force to seperate. Also wtf is up with the binder on there?

Cars have 4 wheels and self steer a car will not fall over if it loses steering

It's an open ball joint. I have one and even I'm admittedly somewhat worried about the design. Grit gets in there, it'll wear down the joint, and then it can pop off. And then you have no steering, and a linkage that might drop into the road and spear into the asphalt, lifting the whole apparatus (or else bending something vital).

I think the design could be better, with a thick metal ring over a closed joint with a rubber seal over that to prevent dirt-and-grime from getting in there.

Admittedly weight and complexity goes up, along with cost, but this is your steering we're talking about, carrying stuff that's really important (plus you).

That sounds stupid.
A bicycle 'self steers' just like a car. The steering geometry does have trail after all.
But in certain situations the geometry of ground surface and steering will negate train and turn the wheels regardless. This is true for both vehicles.
Now the question arises: Do you really think a double track vehicle 'will not fall over' if the full steering lock is applied at speed? It will barrel roll down the road.
But luckily the whole discussion is purely hypithetically as, again, the mechanism shown here >>2043077 is, just like the equivalent in automobiles, is plenty strong and it is literally everything else responsible for the steering that will fail first (like forkends, blades, crown, steerer, axle, wheel... etc.).
But you insist on
>Ok so you don't know what you looking at
without providing any argument and while ironically raising suspicion to the fact that it is actually you who has neither experience nor knowledge regarding such designs.

>grit gets in there
See above >>2043087 . As long as the boot is tight it wont and its a serviceable item.
>wear down the joint
See above again. If you neglect it the joint will wear.
>it can pop off
The steering will first become terrifying and then unuseable, prompting you to replace the part, long before it is anywhere near seperation.
>might drop into the road
it follows that this will not happen because you will stop using the bike and actually be unable to use it long before you reach a point where this would be possible.
You two guys trust picrel, right? It's the same situation: We all made the experience of how bad it fucks you up when it goes and it always goes at the worst moment. It is always the result of neglect and easily avoided. The only thing that is different: It will not warn you and evem keep you from riding when it's nearing that point. Which a ball joint will.

Yes, I've made exactly that point here >>2043087 . You might want to add that the examples shown itt are way overbuilt even when considering steering forces on a bicycle and comparing the steering linkage and ball joints dimensions to those found o a 3 ton car.
