How do I force my ass and lower back to stop hurting? My bike is the correct size (6 foot 1, L) and my seat is up right (enough so my leg is slightly bent when pedal all the way down, but not locked) and my bars are flat, and my chamois is buttered, but jesus CHRIST for at least 12 hours after a 3 hour, 8 mph relax ride at grandpa pace I am DESTROYED.

Especially the lower back pain it’s gotten so bad that I hurt on days I don’t even ride. Is that normal?

t. guy that goons to Juri from Street Fighter but hates feet

>after a 3 hour, 8 mph relax ride at grandpa pace
This is the issue right here. You're probably riding a relatively aggressive (long and low) position, which would be fine if you were riding aggressively with full muscle activation, but you're not, and so your posterior chain isn't activated, and that means your torso is not supported, so a few muscles in your lower back have to do all the work just to keep your spine erect, and a lot of weight is going into the saddle because you're not bearing down on the pedals like you should be on a bike like that

If you want to cruise around, get an upright cruiser with a big soft spongy saddle, if you want a zippy carbon fred sled, ride it like one

It’s the bike in the OP. Marin Fairfax 1. Sadly I cannot afford another one so I am stuck with it. Any other changes I can make? I ordered an ergonomic Cruiser Comfort saddle online just now.

Oh, that's not an aggressive bike at all. Still, how much work are your legs doing? 8mph for 3 hours is odd. That's slow enough where you're already working harder than you should to keep the bike upright. Maybe just try riding a little harder and see what happens? Is it just super crowded or what's making you go at that pace?

Honestly as our friend scout used to say back in the day, I’m a big fatty fat fat fat.

Thankfully it’s not as bad as some anons I’ve seen on here, but still, 235 is pretty big. According to TDEEcalculstor I should be between 160 to 180.

You couple fat and not very fit with the asthma and you get slow progress. Now, granted, I -am- doing this to get more fit, walking was a start, but I also want to eventually tour. So I figure without buying a 400$ bike fit from the only place nearby that does it, there’s gotta be other options.

My legs dont do much work, I find my most comfy gear is 2 out of 3 in front and 7 out of 9 in the back.

I know you’re SUPPOSED to stay in 3 out of 3 front-wise when riding on flat ground, but I’m deathly afraid of cross chaining and I know for a fact I’ll forget to check every now and then.

There’s no crowds and it’s flat, so I will try to go faster for longer and see what the deal is.

Maybe 5-10 years ago, but I certainly wouldn't call 42mm wide by today's standard.
For coarse gravel and the occasional short stretches of single track I frequently ride it's definitely a big upgrade with 55mm semi slicks.

Don't get me wrong. The 42s I had were good and felt more zippy especially on pavement ofc, but on longer rides I'd get numb hands from the vibrations. That's why I went with the redshift suspension stem also.

Never had those hand problems again after the tire and stem upgrade.
