>be cop
>drew the short straw and put in a patrol car at a popular cyclist route
>90% of my day is now spent explaining basic cycling laws to motorists as I hand out fines
I'm going to shoot the next person to say "they shouldn't play with their toys on the road!" I swear to fucking god

Why are motorists so bad at basic traffic laws about bikes?

It's sad we don't here more cop stories like yours, because all I hear these days is:
>be senior beat cop
>make over $350k in a year, just shy of the literal chief of police
>be assigned to a downtown precinct
>go to an entirely different part of the city, of your own initiative
>spend morning handing out tickets to cyclists rolling through a stop sign in a park
>get back into car to grab lunch
>roll through the exact same stop sign you were standing at
>hit a cyclist who had the right of way
>no consequences or discipline, not even traffic ticket
Like, fuck, I do think cyclists do deserve tickets for ignoring stop signs and disagree with the Idaho stop, but it's some cosmic fucking irony to then break that exact same law and also manage to hit a cyclist doing it.

the NYPD's budget is more than 40x that of the entire cuban military and somehow the only kind of law enforcement they know how to do is run over software engineers for their own safety because they had headphones and don't they know that's dangerous

Cops resent having to do traffic work because first of all anything with "work" is something they're allergic to, but secondly, normies commit moving violations all the time so it's not something a low IQ bully can use as a reliable, repeat pretext for violent behavior towards civilians, the way jaywalking or being black in public are. It would cause so much backlash the police would actually be defunded instead of being "defunded" (having some mean words printed in an obscure lefty blog).

In short, what's the point of being a cop if you can't beat the shit out of people and shoot them in the back whenever your wife isn't available for a beatdown.

The answer is simple:
Motorism and mental decay form a downward spiral.

I see mental decay in here all the time but it sure as hell isn't motorism, whatever the fuck this drivel means.

as a longtime lover of both cars and bicycles seeing this sort of nonsense bums me out. and believe me, i've been run off the road and sworn and and nearly killed plenty of times on my bike. and i'm well aware of the many ills of car-based development, planning, and infrastructure. i used to teach that stuff to graduate students at one of the largest public universities in the country. but blaming cars as causing some sort of mental derangement or pointing to the acts of individuals affected by whatever it is you're describing misses the point entirely and is just one of a million examples of the contemporary habit of pointing out legitimate social problems and blaming some other side as the source of the problem. these are policy problems, not a problem of motorists being somehow bad or insane or the enemy. changes in policy and infrastructure change behavior. problems like this--whether of cyclist/pedestrian vulnerability or class inequality--require collective solutions and that requires recognizing that we are all in this together, even when we don't share definitions of the the same solutions, or goals, or even problems. it's important to recognize that everyone is just trying to live and we all have our own personal goals interests we pursue. we have to figure out how to make reasonable tradeoffs in crafting a world for all of us, not delegitimize people who have other interests.

I think there's something to it, I mainly bike but use a car share 6 or so times a year, and driving for just a couple hours makes me angry and impatient with no empathy for anyone else on the road.

Nice larp but any non retarded cop would know that being put on traffic ticket duty means even the retarded cops think you are retardeder and want you to quit.

I saw the cops pull over down the road from me and sit waiting. I'm not getting another fucking helmet ticket. In my mind I hear "drop a gear and disappear". So I cut someone's driveway and duck on to a forest path. Not today. Not today.

Cops pulled me and my kid over biking when he was 6. I was thinking death was too sweet for the man's pig army but then she wrote him a ticket for free ice cream because he had a helmet on. Maybe you should get a helmet.
