Cars are good for short distance journeys like heading across town, trains are good for long distance journeys like heading 50+ miles away, planes are good for travelling to other countries, and ferries are good for crossing rivers/travelling to islands of the coast etc

The physics don't change and railroads are now and will be, if we don't invent something better, the best option for land transport. They are obviously constrained by the demand for land, large yard spaces required for changing cars, and the general rail network architecture which can't satisfy direct delivery except to large industrial plants.
Also beware that government subsidies distort things greatly, especially when it comes to automobiles.
