I should also add that most bikes with coaster brakes are single speed and have chains that are already shortened to remain under tension without needing any kind of chain tensioners so the chances of even dropping a chain are basically 0 if you have a single speed

I crossed the Pyreenees on rim brakes. The trick is to sit upright, open your jacket and go as fast as possible, so the air does most of the braking. And always brake hard and short, them release to give the rims time to cool down. But you should do that on discs too.

I've worn 3 rims, 1 enough to crack, I get about 60k miles from a rim riding in all weather and there's a lot of salt, sand, and road dust here. Most normies won't even get close to riding that mileage so rim wear is a non-issue
