Texas lawmakers voted to require public schools to display the Ten Commandments in every classroom, advancing a conservative priority before the end of the state legislature’s session next week.

If signed by Governor Greg Abbott, also a Republican, the measure would require schools to show posters or framed copies of the biblical mandates in clearly visible locations. Schools that don’t already own copies that are at least 16 by 20 inches (41 by 51 centimeters) for each classroom can use district funds to buy them.

The legislative approval puts Texas at the forefront of an initiative that opponents in other parts of the country have assailed as a threat to the US Constitution’s freedom-of-religion protections. Last year, a federal judge blocked a Louisiana law that required that state’s classrooms to display the Ten Commandments. Texas legislators will require the state attorney general to defend schools if they are sued over the displays.

The Ten Commandments bill adds to a series of conservative education priorities passed by the Texas legislature in recent months, including a $1 billion school-choice program long sought by Abbott.

The Texas House of Representatives advanced a bill requiring all public schools in the state to display the Ten Commandments in the classroom, the latest effort by conservative-led states to integrate religion into public education.

The Republican-controlled House voted 82-46 to approve a version of Senate Bill 10 on May 25 after about a week of debate and several attempts by Democratic lawmakers to amend the bill to require other religious texts from Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism be posted in classrooms. Those amendments were rejected.

The bill was passed with an amendment to clarify that the state, instead of schools or school districts, will defend and pay for any legal challenges to the law.

The legislation likely faces legal action as critics have raised concerns over its potential violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, which prohibits public schools from providing religious instruction" in a devotional manner or prescribing "prayers to be recited by students or by school authorities." Supporters of the bill have argued that the Ten Commandments are a foundational aspect of U.S. history, according to The Texas Tribune.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is expected to sign the measure, which would take effect in September. The state Senate passed the bill in March with a 20-11 vote.

What a surprise, conservative Christians saying things they don't actually believe in order to force dogma they don't actually follow on children they don't actually care about, using other people's money.

I'm pretty sure this was one of those badly-written laws like the abortion bans designed to instantly become a SCOTUS court case which, if affirmed, would overturn decades of legal precedent.

“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.” thou shall not covet thy neighbor's ass. These 3 are the main pillers of capitalism. Republicans worship MAMMON(hallowed be its name), and make graven images in the form of paper money to worship it, and greed and covetousness arethe main stays of Republican capitalism

The Constitution does not mention God, Jesus Christ, or Christianity. It contains the word “religion” only twice, in Article 6, which exempts government office holders from a religious test; and in the First Amendment.

President of Vice JD Weird is a Catholic
He doesn't know his own country's history. As Thomas Jefferson said:
'I do not find in orthodox Christianity one redeeming feature'
'There is more need for lighthouses in our country than churches.'
'But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.'
'Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear'
'I have examined all the known superstitions of the world, and I do not find in our particular superstition of Christianity one redeeming feature. They are all alike founded on fables and mythology.'
'Christianity is the most perverted system that ever shone on man'
The latter quote definitely applies to JD 'Couchfucker' Weird.
Oh, and religion doesn't have the right to exist in government, least of all educational establishments (outside of RE classes). The Establishment Clause in the Constitution makes sure of that. Whilst the government can't tell people who/how to worship (PROTIP: even Islam & $cientology have tax exemption as religions), religions/those who are religious in US don't have the right to tell the government how to run the country.
If North Korea is Best Korea, why don't Christians there have the right to tell the government what to do? Check and fucking Mate, Christains.

It doesn't matter what Jefferson thinks: elected officials represent and serve the people, and the early Americans were by and large very serious about their Christian faith.
