A coded critique adopted by Wall Street traders to describe President Trump’s whipsawing tariff policies made its way to a White House press briefing on Wednesday.

The “Taco trade”, an acronym that stands for “Trump Always Chickens Out”, describes the pattern of Trump’s threats of blanket tariffs, which often sends stocks tumbling only for the market to recover when he pauses or lifts them entirely.

It has become a favoured term among stockbrokers and analysts trying to navigate the president’s on-again, off-again tariff policies.

Trump appeared unimpressed with the Taco acronym when asked about it by a CNBC reporter during a swearing-in ceremony for Jeanine Pirro as interim US attorney for the District of Columbia.

“I chicken out? Oh, I’ve never heard that,” Trump said, before denying that he had ever backed down.

The US president announced large international tariffs on his flagship “liberation day” last month, which caused the steepest collapse in global stock markets since the pandemic. The 145 per cent tariffs imposed on China have since been reduced to 30 per cent.

Last week, markets across Europe and the US nosedived again after Trump vowed to impose a 50 per cent blanket tariff on imported goods from the European Union from June 1.

Trump announced on Sunday that the tariffs would be delayed until July 9 after the EU had agreed to speed up negotiations, and the losses were quickly reversed when US markets opened after the long Memorial Day weekend.

“I gave the European Union a 50 per cent tax tariff, and they called up and they said ‘please let’s meet right now’,” Trump said on Wednesday at the White House.

“After I did what I did they said ‘we’ll meet any time you want’. You call that chickening out?”

“It’s called negotiation,” he added, before suggesting that his tactics included setting “a ridiculous high number” for tariff rates and going down when he gets other countries to cave in to his demands.

He told the reporter: “Don’t ever say what you said, that’s a nasty question.”

The Taco acronym was coined this month by the Financial Times commentator Robert Armstrong, and has since been adopted as shorthand by investment bankers and analysts as Trump continues to flip flop on tariffs.

“The recent rally has a lot to do with markets realising that the US administration does not have a very high tolerance for market and economic pressure, and will be quick to back off when tariffs cause pain,” Armstrong wrote. “This is the Taco theory: Trump Always Chickens Out.”

The theory suggests that investors should not fret when Trump’s trade-war threats send global markets tumbling, as the stock market will bounce back when he abruptly reverses the policy.

“Taco trade triumphs once again,” said Chris Beauchamp, the chief market analyst at IG International, after Tuesday’s recovery.

>I never chicken out
>Says the man who has yet to stick with a tariff number for more than a month
He does realize you're supposed to use those kind of tariff threats in PRIVATE and not make them policy first, on the grounds it is playing economic chicken if they actually do refuse, right?

It was a trap and he walked right into it like he always does.
Now if he tries to use tariffs as a negotiating tactic again, he's left with two choices.
1. Do what he's been doing, announce a massive number then lower it a few days later, legitimizing the meme and severely bruising his ego.
2. Actually double down on the tariffs, causing the economy to slump, which will be blamed entirely on him.
So basically he's four months in and the negotiating tactic he had planned to define his second term has become a liability.

That's the problem with electing a president who's not smart enough to understand complicated topics, too lazy to shift tactics if they don't work, and more concerned about headlines than results. Then making him the face of American politics for more than a decade.
Other nations/ Democrat states/ moderately observant toddlers can read him like a book a this point.

That's kind of the point.
After ten years, everyone knows he's all bark and no bite. Going all the way back to him backing down and cucking out from "Lock her up", his political career has been an endless stream of big words and meek actions.
So... yeah. People aren't afraid to "poke the bear", because they know he has no teeth.
