Zohran Mamdani Proposes Taxing 'Whiter Neighborhoods' in NYC

New York City's Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has said he wants to "shift the tax burden" to "richer and whiter neighborhoods" if he secures election in November.

A housing policy document on Mamdani's official website includes a pledge to "shift the tax burden from overtaxed homeowners in the outer boroughs to more expensive homes in richer and whiter neighborhoods."

Newsweek contacted the Mamdani campaign for comment via email on Friday outside of regular office hours.

What To Know
Mamdani's official campaign website features a policy memo under the title "Supporting homeowners and ending deed theft."

The document says that if elected his administration will "Shift the tax burden from overtaxed homeowners in the outer boroughs to more expensive homes in richer and whiter neighborhoods."

It adds: "The property tax system is unbalanced because assessment levels are artificially capped, so homeowners in expensive neighborhoods pay less than their fair share. The Mayor can fix this by pushing class assessment percentages down for everyone and adjusting rates up, effectively lowering tax payments for homeowners in neighborhoods like Jamaica and Brownsville while raising the amount paid in the most expensive Brooklyn brownstones."

This isn't discrimination, it's the opposite. It's making it so they pay their fair share. But I guess it's easier to just go off headlines and clickbait instead of actually reading the policy and the reasons behind it.

NVM I found it. The relevant line seems to be:
"The city’s wealthiest pockets pay just a fraction of their just tax bill because assessed
values are artificially capped to stay low while actual market values soar".
There isn't anything specific in there, it's mostly high level talking points.

Do you happen to know what is being referred to? Is it like what California does where assessed values on property have a max yearly increase of 1% to supposedly protect elderly?
I'm not actually clear on what he's referencing here when he says it's capped

The problem is you can't just throw race out of the equation when it was a major factor in how things got this bad. When NYC was being rebuilt and redesigned minority neighborhoods were literally plowed through for highways while the white neighborhoods were left alone to reap the benefits. Places like public pools and playgrounds were intentionally placed in more out of the way locations in minority districts, and underfunded as well compared to their white counterpart.

You can't separate cause from effect. Acting like segregation's effects ended when it did is ignorant; the ripples from these policies affects neighborhoods even now, and they will continue to do so until they're addressed.

Director's law, but also the taxation breakdown.

Breaking down the citizenry into 5 quintiles (5 x 20 = 100%), the lowest 4 quintiles DO NOT PAY NET TAXES. Only the top quintile pays net taxes, and a non-trivial part of that is the welfare state.

I get that you fefs want to spew your propaganda as if it made sense, but the slightest scrutiny reveals it to be bunk. The other guy's point stands.

Also, it's not discrimination if their current position is based on discrimination against minority communities you fucking retard. This is equality because it takes away the unfair advantage.

WRONG, he actually said "whitER" meaning there are more white people living in it than in less rich neighborhood, not that he will be taxing white only.

Learn to read, moron. Anyone with basic literacy uderstood he was pointing out the inequality of how less white neighborhood are paying more taxes and to end this racial equality.

There's probably half a dozen political ideologies where some number of their adherents could be classified as far left or far right.
There's far right libertarians, far right authoritarians, far left authoritarians, far left communists, far left social Democrats, far right national socialists, even some far right monarchists.

I strongly believe it's not the blanket political ideology itself that makes someone far right or far left, it's how extreme they are in their desired implementation of such ideologies.

Worded another way, there are very moderate believers of pretty much any political ideology, but some portion of them will always be radical in their beliefs. Doesn't matter what the ideology is.

What make a party extremist is when it is part of their ideology to establish a SINGLE-party system and declare the adhesion to any other political affiliation an act of trahison.

If you don't agree with that definition, you can consider a that a party is far-keft when they want to abolish private property, which isn't what Mamdni is for.

In either case he is not far-left.

Not all Republicans question the 2020 results and trying to deny the result of the 2020 election means that you effectively adhere to the coup attempt that tried to overthrown a legitimate election.

This is reasonable cause to be labelled as a domestic terrorist.

If you actually knew anything about America instead of just hitting the talking points your boss tells you to you'd know that Presidential candidates have to be approved to be on the ballot on a per state basis: https://www.nass.org/sites/default/files/surveys/2020-07/research-ballot-access-president-Jan20_0.pdf
So while you may not like it states are perfectly capable of determining who appears on their ballots even in elections for federal office. And, of course, they did obey the court's orders and put him on the ballot when told they had to. So you're 0/2 on your argument that the Dems want to be the uniparty. Meanwhile, trump said that if he won we won't need to have elections again, and dragged his feet on obeying court orders related to the return of wrongly deported immigrants. Please try again with a different argument mr. shill, and tell your boss that this one ain't it.

I'm not against this because it is the first step towards taxing "minorities"(blacks and mexicans) more than whites. Just wait until politicians start running on the platform of more taxes on certain races and less taxes on others and eventually one of them is going to win
