new thread because the old one is about to 404

Will the crankcase gas venting work correctly if I delete my PCV valve and reroute the vent line to just before the throttle body instead of in the intake manifold? I'm planning on adding a catch can to filter out the oil and gas vapors.

your crankcase wont have positive pressure issues, but you'll likely have oil condensation issues. the pcv system has a breather before the throttle plate and pulls fresh air through a breather in front of the throttle plate which sucks out any condensation as it boils off. if you get rid of the pcv the air in the crankcase will be stagnant and it wont clear out all the moisture as its running.

>oem exhaust parts
Depends on the parts. Rubber exhaust hangers I'd get OEM, just because cheap rubber doesn't last longer than a few months, but stuff like mufflers and gaskets? Doesn't really matter. The sound of your car may change slightly if you use different types or thicknesses of metals, or brands / styles of mufflers, but they'll all generally do their job, including the cheap shit. That being said, always check OEM prices because you might be surprised. OEM Ford backbox for my Mum's Fusion was like ยฃ50, which was no more than the cheap Chinese garbage on eBay.

Any tips on getting over an intense fear of driving?
Everyone says to work yourself up in baby steps, but that's not possible because for that to work, I'd need to buy a car first. But for that, I'd have to do a test drive in some completely unfamiliar location, which is too much for me.
I'm just not good in social situations and driving is 99% just a sequence of complex social situations.
Driving with a family member or friend is not possible, they all live across the country.

how much of a difference on ride comfort can tires really make?

i have a pic related, 2017 w213 avantgarde with normal suspension (not airmatic) on 17 inch wheels fitted with 225/55 r17 continental ecocontact 6 tires and i feel like it doesnt ride as it should. i can feel every little imperfection on the road and when i go over speed bumps or potholes it takes a while to "settle down" as opposed to pretty much any other car i ever had which might take it harder, but at least it was fraction of a second and it was done. with this mercedes its like every bump in the road shakes the car for a full second or two. it is more comforable the faster i go and on very smooth roads it drives excellent

i just had yearly inspection and it passed with flying colors, so there isnt anything wrong with the suspension. so now im wondering if the car is simply shit or is it due to bad tires. they are one of those low rolling resistance models for better economy types so naturally they are harder, but if im not mistaken they arent runflat (which are even more hard). this same car could be specced with 19 inch wheels and runflat tires and here i am with 17 inch ones and i feel like it's undriveable. btw, its not like im used to "better" cars, my 2014 golf 7 gtd, 2010 e90 320d, 2013 skoda octavia all felt like they absorbed the road better

Different places are gonna handle impound auctions in different ways, but in my metro area the city with tons of impounds from street racing will list the category of violation for why the car is in the impound lot.
For example, id stear clear or something that's listed as being there because of accident/abandoned but if it's registration violation or some other traffic citation well it was probably running when they pulled it over.
Fucking lmao at the idea of buying a Kia Rio from an impound

No, that likely means the car came with either 16โ€ or 17โ€ depending on the trim. But you need to get the one thatโ€™s the correct rim size for your wheels. Tire width (the first number) you have a little wiggle room, but thereโ€™s really no point in messing with it. You also have a little wiggle room with the second number (sidewall height) but thatโ€™ll through off your speedometer and how the car rides.

the factory service manual will list a code set criteria that will tell you exactly the conditions that cause the code to be set.

that's the slip yoke on the driveshaft that allows it to slide in and out slightly if you hit big bumps. yes the rust is normal, it's untreated steel. it won't hurt anything, but if it bugs you could clean it off with a brass bristled brush and spray a bit of fluid film on it to keep it from re-rusting.

Can I attach an oil scavenging pump to my PCV to decrease the crankcase pressure below ambient? I'll still have a PCV valve to vent off any pressure if there's more blowby than the pump can handle.
Going ITBs so don't have a good post-throttle body vacuum to use anymore.

Alternative would be just putting an air filter on my rocker cover and calling it a day. No vacuum, no pcv, no nothing.

probably either a siezed parking brake cable that isn't fully moving, or rust jacking in one or both rear calipers keeping them from engaging completely.
unhook the cables from the rear calipers, do the cables slide freely when you engage and disengage the brake handle? if not replace your cables, if so replace your rear calipers

ok was expecting a caliper so disregard the advice i gave you before.
you're in luck then, just adjust the brake. jack it up, and spin the adjuster until the wheel stops moving, then back it off just a tad so it just moves with a slight resistance. do that on both sides and you will have a good parking brake again.
if it still sucks, disconnect and check the brake cable as described here >>28436911, if that doesn't do it, the only thing left is your shoes are shot.

there is a hole to access it in the back, you may need to remove a rubber plug. spin the wheel gently as you adjust, keep adjusting until you can't move the wheel any more, then back it off so it's just barely making contact, that is fully adjusted

My w140 had two pressures listed inside the fuel door. One for comfort and one for high speed.

If you have a garage, yes but you likely dont need a big compressor.
When I had a garage I had a 30 gallon tank and a 1 Gallon quieter compressor. I used the small one for filling tires and spraying compressed air, only used the big one once to spray paint. Too loud and unwieldy. Electric tools exist that do what air tools used to do.
Now, I am an apartmentcuck and I just use a crappy 12V tire inflator.

My dad's 1998 Corolla makes a knocking sound when you shake the steering wheel left and right. This only happens when the car is stationary and it doesn't matter whether the engine is on or off. I have checked left and right tie rods (inner and outer) and there is no play. What's the most likely cause? It either has to be the rack and pinion gears having backlash, or the rack mounts. I didn't see any movement of the rack itself, but that's with the car up in the air. I can't see shit with the car on the ground. (With the car jacked up it doesn't make noise because there's no load on the steering).

I have a mk2 Focus that has the stock ford wheel nuts. I know that the problem with them is the cap they put on them, coming loose and being a ballache to remove. So I want to replace them with better ones.

The thing is, there's two different types. One with a spinning washer and a newer design without. Do I have to go with the spinning washer design? Or can I use the one piece solid nut? The dimensions are all identical.

I see conflicting opinions on whether or not the spinning washer allows for a more secure fit. The alloys are the original ones for the car. I should probably just get ones with the spinning washer as that's what's currently on them right? As long as they don't have the stupid cap that swells and makes them a nightmare to remove.

hard to say for sure, maybe it only leaks under certain conditions and you just haven't had that condition yet. maybe the thicker PS fluid vs the ATF is enough to make it not leak. also most power steering fluid brands have stopleak in them so maybe it swelled the seal.
personally if it's not a shitbox, i would fix the leak, flush the incorrect fluid you added and replace it with a high quality synthetic atf that meets the oem spec.

>I'm just not good in social situations and driving is 99% just a sequence of complex social situations.
You're not going to want to hear this because I know I wouldn't but the only way out is through. I used to be the same way for years and years but eventually my disgust for stupid people on the road surpassed my fear and I'm relatively comfy now. There are still certain highly specific situations where I get anxiety. But it's few and far in between and there's always an action you can take to make the situation easier at the exchange for losing time. This unironically works for face to face social situations too from what I've been told, but I don't have personal experience with that because I was never forced to talk to people day after day.
Unfortunately it seems like you're being thrown into the deep end with having to do test drives, but you could play it risky and skip the drive completely. The other thing you could look to do is rent a vehicle as well at least until you get comfortable enough doing a test drive.

Two stupid questions, related.
1. When the "change oil light" comes on and it says 15% oil life, are you supposed to change it then or roughly when it reaches zero percent? Idk if zero is the ideal change point or the "you done fucked up" point. Assuming the onboard computer is tracking it "correctly" and it's not just a "it's been X miles since last change".
2. Obviously said light has come on and I'm going to change it soon.jpg, but it's also been like 2-3 years since my last change since I drive the car infrequently and apparently you're supposed to change it every year at minimum? How big a deal is this if true.

I went through two too small cars before finding a car I could sit comfortably in and then bought that one then and there. It was a Honda Fit btw. Can't say enough good things about it for my use case.

Speaking of belts

I had to replace my belt and AC compressor a few months ago. When I put the new one in, the pulley very slightly scrapes against the clutch plate on it and sounds like shit. Also, the pulley doesn't spin constantly, it will start and stop intermittently.

What can I do?

find where it's scraping and take a bit of metal off with a file
for the starting and stopping, use a testlight to determine if it's stopping despite having constant voltage, if so that points to a bad ac clutch. if it's stopping because the power is getting cut to it, that points a problem elsewhere, ie refrigerant charge too low/too high, or an intermittent electrical connection somewhere

Too much vacuum is also bad. You just need a slightly negative pressure. Too much vacuum risks destroying various different seals that weren't designed for vacuum conditions. Also any vacuum you create your oil pump has to fight in order to suck up oil. Perfectly fine at slightly below atmospheric pressures, but too much and it does become an issue.

I spun it before putting it in and it did it then too. I tested the clutch with a high amperage 12V power supply I have and it works fine.

The scraping is coming from a very thin space between the pulley and the clutch. The clutch is at a very slight angle, compared to the pulley.

You can see it here: https://files.catbox.moe/k8jlxm.mp4

Not that guy, but I'd expect a "mini valet" to do a decent job of cleaning, with various products I'd never use, but stopping short of actually correcting the paintwork.
So I'd guess a deep clean, pressure wash, snow foam (because it looks good) maybe some wheel cleaner, wash, you might even get a wax (but I doubt it). Interior vacuumed, foam cleaner on the upholstery, some of that shitty silicone dressing that makes your dash shiny, glass gleaned, tyres blacked.

I figured mini valet would be something like

>polish dashboard
>hoover the interior

I think it depends on the use of "valet". If you're into mechanical paint correction then that's a whole different ballgame - anything else is just a good wash 'n' wax.

Fixing is cheaper and financially safer. Even if the "major repairs" are $9000, thats probably less than what you'd pay the first year on that new truck.

What repairs are you looking at, and how many miles on the truck?

not exactly auto related, but engine is engine, even if it is 400cc one cylinder...
so i bought 2 identical ride-on-lawnmowers from an estate, both with kawasaki fc420 14 hp engine. im gonna keep one and sell another. they are like twins iin every regard with only one difference, the state of the engine. what im going to describe is my experiene after i changed oil, fuel, filters and put 5-6 hours on them
>mower A
takes ages to start up when it is not burning hot outside, im talking 20 seconds of cranking, giving it a pause and then another 10-15 seconds before it fires up. even when engine is hot it takes a couple of seconds before it starts. once it is running on idle it is silky smooth, i really couldnt believe it how smooth it is. on full throttle it is very loud, but smooth sounding and no strange noises. also i noticed it gets hotter than mower B when doing hard work (i can feel the heat on my shins, radiating from under the bonnet, no temp sensors on this machine so it is somewhat subjective)
>mower B
starts immediately, engine visually in much better shape than the first one, seems like it has done a lot less hours. on idle it is a little louder than the mower A and has something like ticking sound. like there is some metal bracket loose, i really dont know how to describe it. i think it might be coming from the front side of the engine where is the valve cover and exhaust, but im not sure. on full throttle it either goes away or the engine sounds masks it. also, on full throttle it is MUCH quieter than the mower A. it maybe feels a bit stronger than engine in mower A, but im not sure

which one would you get rid of? im thinking of keeping the mower B

they seem fine. had similar issue, lug nuts were on too tight so i gave up on using OEM tire wrench and instead opted for pic related that i had lying around. i thought the telescoping handle would make it much easier, but because of the low quality socket paired with weird angle once the handle is extended i ended up stripping the lug nuts

best thing to do is to use high quality tire wrench that will really hug the lug nut and use a piece of hollow pipe as an extension

A is running lean, possibly not receiving enough fuel. Other one might have some sort of valve train tick, but uhhh, who cares.

Try swapping mower B's carburetor onto Engine A's engine to see if it fixes the cold start. Check for any exhaust leaks for the noise differences. (just look for soot anywhere between the block and exhaust tip)

Did you swap spark plugs and run a tank of premium fuel with a fuel injector cleaner though? Something to clear out any carbon or gunk.

>A is running lean, possibly not receiving enough fuel.
now that i think about it, it kinda makes sense. i assumed the compression was bad, but maybe it is the fuel. that would also explain why it is quieter on idle (probably lower rpms)??. but what about being much louder on full throttle and getting more hot than the other one?
>Did you swap spark plugs and run a tank of premium fuel with a fuel injector cleaner though? Something to clear out any carbon or gunk.
like i mentioned, i only changed filters, fluids and run them both to spend 2 tanks of regular gas.
to be honest, if i bought only one, id be more than happy with either of the 2.
of the two, mower B seems like a better one to me for the previously mentioned reasons (also forgot to mention that mower A also has a very slight oil leak around the crankshaft while B is bone dry) and im 90% sure it will be the one i keep. i only made this thread because B is somewhat louder on idle and has a ticking sound (i would definitely not notice this if i didnt have a same machine for direct comparison) and i needed to hear if it could be some major fault waiting to happen or is it most likely something trivial

>and getting more hot than the other one?
Thats what makes me think its running a bit lean. I have no idea what you're talking about for noise at idle or full throttle, without an instrument measuring that you could be totally wrong. We also have no idea if one of the mufflers has a rusted out baffle.

If you've got the free time swap the carburetor like I said and if that fixes the engine issue, I was right about a possible lean condition. If theres no change it may not be the carb. Since you have both already, get the overall better mower's engine running perfect putting the "bad" parts on the worse condition mower. Same with anything else, just swap good parts if you can identify something with excess wear or cracks or whatever. Just make 1 really good used mower, and the second will be a mechanic's special to bubba thinking he can fix er up.

they do it because their transmissions don't have synchronizers. when you shift a normal cars manual transmission the synchronizers force the shafts inside the transmission to match speed so that you can move the shifter into the next gear, they act as little clutches so everything gets up to speed and matches rpm. larger transmissions used in semi trucks don't have synchronizers due to the amount of gears and rotational mass they have, they would have to have massive synchronizers and space is already limited. instead of using synchronizers to match shaft speeds they use the engine rpm. so when they shift they need to engage the clutch in neutral and rev the engine to get shaft speeds to match. you don't technically need to use the clutch to do this but if you don't get the engine rpms perfect then the dogs on the gears take a huge beating since they are also dealing with the engines rotating mass, which is also way more than that of a car or motorcycle engine.

I've heard/read of people rev matching when they drive regular vehicles. IIRC, it was for downshifting, but I don't know why. Is it so it's less jerky between gears?

you always want to rev match when downshifting for a smoother ride and less clutch disc wear, but it isnt required in a car with synchronizers. you can do it in 3 ways

the double clutching way
-cruising in 5th
-press clutch in and release throttle
-shift to neutral
-release clutch
-apply throttle to get to whatever rpm the lower gear you want to engage will be at
-press clutch
-shift to lower gear
-release clutch and apply throttle

the double clutching way without actually using the clutch, also called floating the gears. you have to be careful doing this, if you dont get the rpms just right youll end up grinding the gears and if you do it constantly youll damage your transmission
-cruising in 5th
-release throttle and pull shifter to neutral at the same time
-apply throttle to get to whatever rpm youre going to be at in the lower gear
-press shifter into lower gear (itll just slip right in if you got the rpms close enough, otherwise itll grind if the rpm difference is too big)
-apply throttle

then theres the normal way
-cruising in 5th
-press clutch in
-shift to whatever lower gear you want while giving the throttle a quick jab to raise rpms to wherever they are going to be in the lower gear you want
-release clutch and apply throttle

then theres the normal way but without rev matching. alot of people do this and its really not an issue in normal daily driving, it just puts extra wear and tear on the clutch disc and can make the ride jerkier if you do it too quickly. if youre driving hard especially around curvy roads it could cause the engine driven tires to momentarily lock up if you release the clutch too fast and at too high of an rpm.
-cruising in 5th
-press clutch in
-pull shifter to lower gear
-release clutch slowly/quickly allowing the clutch to force the engine to whatever rpm youre going to be at in the lower gear
-apply throttle

I'm not the best at driving a manual but I tried a 2019 Mustang Bullitt and it felt like I was screwing it up when I was trying to get at least a little good at rev matching. Almost like with the auto rev matching on, the clutch acts like a binary, instead of me slowly reducing to find out where it catches.

forgot to mention, i wouldnt float the gears in any car that has synchronizers, unless you literally get the rpm perfect (you wont) youll just be wearing your synchronizer into dust. its wont even make any bad noises, youll just be sitting there trying to pull it into gear and it wont let you. you can do it in an emergency and you have a dead clutch pedal, but youll want to minimize the amount of times you shift to save wear and tear on your synchronizers. i had the throwout bearing on my car shit out when i was 120ish miles from home, called a tow truck and waited about 6 hours until they called me and said it was going to be later the next day. at this point is was 3am, there was no traffic and it was mostly highway so i drove it home with no clutch. had to use the starter to start the car in first a few times and missed a couple shift, changed my transmission fluid when i did the clutch job and the fluid was so damn glittery with synchro material.
>>28456090
sounds like it just had a really aggressive clutch. i havent driven anything nice enough to have active revmatching so i have no actual experience with them. im pretty sure the engine computer uses a sensor that can tell what gear the shifter is in and uses that to automatically raise the engine rpm where it needs to be for a perfect downshift. if the revmatching was active then you wouldnt have to jab the throttle to raise engine rpms while downshifting, itd go like
-cruising in 5th
-press clutch in
-pull shifter to lower gear
-computer sees the new gearshift position and automatically raises rpms to where they need to be
-release clutch
-apply throttle

You can get it repaired at places that repair/refinish wheels but it's often cheaper to just get a used wheel from a salvage yard/u-pull-it

Long as hell post but I tried to give as much info as I had

2014 Ford Focus SE, manual 5 speed

Won't go into gear anymore, except randomly, I had reverse but it went out after reversing twice. Gets stuck on the right side (where 3rd, 4th, 5th, and reverse are). Was able to jiggle it around and get into 1st but it wouldn't catch. After a few attempts it finally did.

Closed transmission fluid system w/plug on side of tranny that can drain and refill. Heard some cars use brake fluid for the tranny, reservoir is full so that can't be it.

Replaced clutch at 180k-ish miles because it burnt out. Roughly 100k on new one. This isn't how the car behaved when the clutch went out.

Any idea what I should fuck with next?

Can do you get a car to last 500k+ miles? Is it all luck along with regular maintenance or do the people with these "million miles cars" sink tons of money to get that far?

It depends on the car, your maintenance schedule, how much money you're willing to spend on it, and what you consider "acceptable condition."

But honestly yes, a lot of the guys that get their cars up to very high mileage spend a lot of money on it, if for no other reason than old cars tend to not have a lot of parts available for them.

It's luck combined with situational awareness to get that far without a collision of some kind that damages the chassis beyond realistic repair, and living in an area without road salt helps a lot.
highest mileage vehicles I've had I owned from 297k to 334k, previous owner hit one deer and put two replacement engines in it (2.4l ecotec things), i hit a deer with it, and the guy I sold it to has replaced the rocker panels but it's still on the road north of 360k

I'm looking to buy a wheel hub spindle from RockAuto so that replacing the wheel bearing will be a bit easier. Should I go for WJB, DuraGo, or GSP? Or should I just remove the bearing outer race from the old spindle with an angle grinder and reuse it?

Find something with fewer miles than a round trip to the moon. If its $5k at a dealership, its likely a $2000 vehicle if you bought from an individual. If your budget is $5k and you just need some wheels to get around, a diesel truck is not the vehicle for you.

Budget is higher than 5k, no doubt. Dealership said the Silverado was a trade-in and that "it's good". Obviously I can't trust every judgement, especially when the mileage has long surpassed its expected lifespan, but I am tempted.

Think I'll go look at individual sellers again though, thx

As long as you're content letting the tow truck take that bitch away when it finally breaks down go for it.

Well all of them assuming you use the device correctly
>or explode?
Don't get the Kaczynski brand...

Harbor frieght sells a pancake or hot dog one for like $150. Milwaukie and most other cordless brands have a little inflator now too. Some even have automatic sensors to turn off at a set (by you) PSI rating.

I mostly want a sanity check, but I want to replace the head unit in my 2005 Mercedes SLK. I was thinking of buying this https://www.amazon.nl/-/en/Android-Mercedes-Benz-supports-Navigation-Bluetooth/dp/B08B12J164?language=en_GB
Now I have Harman Kardon so apparently a fiber optic loop. That listing says to buy a cable to go to the back, but seems like you can also just use a converter like this https://www.amazon.nl/Erisin-PC001-glasvezel-decoder-box/dp/B082SS9SWP?language=en_GB
Does this work? Most of those converters only list the facelift years after 2008 as compatible, but I think it's all the same. I really just want something easy desu.
