car market still seems pretty fucking gay.

cars with 100k are still going for like $20,000 for basic ass shit like a mazda/ honda/toyota. better off buying a NPC mobile new.

I can't believe how hard it is to find an affordable replacement for my old B5 passat(the best car I ever owned). A used A4 seems like a decent deal. I just want a car around 3200 lbs, that's large enough to be comfortable, 200-250 hp. good on the highway.

There are not a lot of cars like this. they are either econo cuck boxes, or sports cars that too expensive.

I don't want to fuck around with some old german shit.

such a disappointing market.

i'll just keep driving my old 2003 f-150 i bought for $3,400 as a work truck 5 years ago. love chugging along in my v8. cheap ass parts. the used market is still overpriced cuck boxes, or old shit that will need work. I see better prices on 20 year old cars.

What model years are you looking at? 2009-2019 cars are a great deal right now.
>At bottom of depreciation curve
>Safety nannies didn't become standard yet (besides ABS and TRC, which barely count and could easily be shut off or disabled if you prefer)
>Emissions bullshit had barely started, so you get reliability + good gas mileage
>Non-cuckbox cars were mass-produced and haven't been riced + totaled into oblivion yet
>Fast enough to keep up with 2025 sports cars without mods (unlike 90s JDM shit)
No shame in croozing in your F-150 if it works for you, but if you're in the market for a "new" used car then options in this time period are hard to beat right now

>What model years are you looking at?

just looking for fun mostly. seeing what other people are eye balling. the car market is probably the worst i've ever seen it. I don't want a 2016 or newer with over 75k on it. people are doing oil changes at like 10k and fucking engines up.

I have 3 cars right now.

i have a 2007 RDX too i bought with high miles. it's all fucked up. transmission sucks on that car, and MPG is dogshit. also, acura is a cunt about parts availability.

97 trans am. bought it cheap used. gonna flip it. I love that car though. I don't have the time for fixing all the tiny shit on it. fixed most of the mechanical stuff.

2003. f-150. Car i drive the most. least stress. just chugs along. cheap parts.

nothing in the market is really that exciting for the price. having a fleet of shitboxes takes a lot of time and the registration is expensive.

the only good value used cars right now are EVs
you can get a model 3 with 400hp for like 20k. model Ys are in the 30s, and that's a mid-size family suv, also with 400 hp.
and you don't have to worry about expensive maintenance
...but ofc that only works if you can charge at home.

everything else is a stupid buy
-anything that can be considered remotely fun and/or a future classic is super overpriced
-anything that is considered remotely reliable is super overpriced (remember that 20k model 3 we talked about? yea, a corolla of the same vintage is the same price, if not more)
-anything that seems cheap is because its super unreliable and expensive to maintain (you COULD get a VERY cheap s-class, but good luck keeping that running)

basically, aside from the EV thing, the only thing other way to not get fucked is to be a mechanic and go with a cheap unreliable car, hoping that by doing the labor yourself you avoid getting bankrupted.

that seems to be largely true. that's why I started the thread. I used Tesla is something I would consider. Although, I really like GT cars that I can rip across state lines. I think the charging would be a pain in the ass.

I see ok deals on high mileage shitboxes. They are scarier than they ever have been. newer engines are kind of dogshit. the varible valve timing/timing/turbo gets fucked on so many cars before 140k. Not to mention parts are a major problem. my acura RDX that ended in 2012 has been a problem getting parts.

if you are going shitbox land, a think a car until like 2006 isn't that scary. the newer stuff is.

sub 10k, the options really aren't that great.

better off just driving a shitbox, and if I want to travel far, just get a rental car. the last time I got a rental it was like $65, which covered the gas i'd be saving.

>I think the charging would be a pain in the ass.
on trips, it isn't. basically, instead of stopping for 10-15mins every 200-250 miles for coffee + piss + pull underwear out of asscrack, you have to stop for 20-25. not a big deal, especially considering that (for most people, presumably you as well) its something that happens rarely, 2-3 times/year

the litmus test is if you can charge at home. stretching the occasional mid-trip stop by 10 mins is no biggie, but having to spend 20-30mins at a charger, potentially multiple times per week, every week, well, THAT is a deal breaker

>the varible valve timing/timing/turbo gets fucked on so many cars
exactly.
if you go far back enough in time to cars that are actually simple and reliable, you start having part availability issues. or, if the parts are available, they are 3rd party only and of unknown quality. and you may run into rust issues too, which are a whole other ballgame
if you go with newer cars, you have way more parts, way more expensive parts, and way more potential sources of problems.
and again, if you have the time, the skills and the equipment to deal with all of that, its ok, and you can get awesome deals that route.

>a think a car until like 2006 isn't that scary
the main thing is to avoid forced induction and direct injection, in that order.

so, yea, assuming you don't have access to a proper workshop with all the tools, diagnostic and otherwise, a lift, etc, i'd say stick to electric.

when a used EV has an issue, its usually some shitty electronic gizmo you can replace with common handtools. you know, retractable door handles, charging port openers, etc. or, even more common, some loose trim pieces on the interior of teslas, lol. that shit is just not that scary to deal with.
way, way better problems to have than having to deal with clogged intake ports causing knock on a DI engine, or diagnosing some issue with your turbo in the cramped engine bay of a modern cuckmobile.

Right about EVs but not sure about Teslas. You can get a great EV with good range just a few yesrs old and low mileage in the 20k zone. This is really cheap for a newish electric car with zero need for maintenance and generally 8 year battery warranty.

>Right about EVs but not sure about Teslas
the thing is, when we're talking about used ones, its really mostly teslas that are worth talking about.
like, sure, right now, if you're buying new, there's other decent options. but if you go back to say 2020, tesla still had a pretty huge advantage over all the others. in range, in efficiency, in the implementation of all the ev tech, etc. everyone else was still stuck in the "fuckfuckfuck, tesla is eating our lunch, quick, throw some batteries and motors in one of our ICEs. and throw some green/blue plasticky bits too, so people know its a reel eee veee" phase.
so, if you're looking for used, you're going to find a hell of a lot more teslas than anything else, and also, those teslas are going to be much better options than all the other evs of equal age.

I'm thinking about buying a second Mk2 Twingo to keep my 2008 Twingo GT company. I'm specifically looking for a euro 5 dci 85 with cruise control and, ideally, automatic climate control. Looking online, it seems like 90% of the diesel Mk2s were bought by fucking d*tch "people". I was able to find one locally, but it's like ~$1500 more than importing a d*tch car, and it's from right when they switched from euro 4 to 5, so there's a chance it has the euro 4 gearbox, which has annoyingly short gearing. The local one does have automatic climate control and the panoramic sunroof and the rare center armrest option, which is cool, and it's never had a fucking swamp monkey in it, which is also nice, but the extra money and risk of short gears kind of puts me off.

2020 is when I would say the competition started to heat up really well. There is for instance the Hyundai Kona from 2020 that comes with heat pump and exceptional range. But maybe those are few and far between. I can't find a 2020 Tesla that isn't priced like a 2023 non-Tesla EV with reasonable mileage. They're all in the 25k-30k range which is enough to get you a good semi recent non-Tesla EV that is just a few years old. I would stay away from the older Nissan Leafs and such entirely due to different charging standards.

>the Hyundai Kona from 2020
they're not really a better value.
the kona is a b-segment crossover. ie, a golf with a lift. and in its best trim, its 65kwhr with 200hp, FWD. in case you're wondering "why the fuck would you make a FWD EV?", its because its a FWD ICE platform that they shoved an EV drivetrain into.

meanwhile, a *base* trim tesla is a whole segment larger, c-segment, has a frunk, has slightly lower capacity (~50kwhr, varies by year), but also better efficiency(in miles/kwhr terms), and is ~300hp and RWD. and that's the base trim, never mind the long range AWD ones, which are iirc ~75kwhr and what, 450ish hp?
oh, and it has access to superchargers, which im not sure if the kona has.

also, im not sure if "exceptional" is the right word to describe a konda's range. iirc it tops out at 250miles or so, and that's the official rating. when it was new.
plus, imo the range is pretty irrelevant, as iirc the kona can't really charge very fast at all. iirc it takes 60mins to do a 10-80% stop? with a model 3, it varies by the precise vintage, but its always much faster. pretty sure even the earliest model 3s could do 150ish miles over 30mins at a supercharger.

even if you could save a couple grand going with the kona, would you choose it over a model 3?

>I can't find a 2020 Tesla that isn't priced like a 2023 non-Tesla EV with reasonable mileage.
bullshit.
when you go 2021 and above that prices for model 3s jump a little, because there was some major update to it. prior to that, its quite easy to find them at 20k or even slightly below. see top of picrel. and you definitely can't find 2023 evs for less, unless we're talking a renault zoe or something, lol.
but even if you wanna go that new, its still incredible value. eg see bottom of picrel, a 2021 awd long range for 27k.

>I would stay away from the older Nissan Leafs and such
yea, obviously. imo anything that predates the model 3 is 100% a compliancemobile, no real life usability

Lexus and BMW absolutely fall into the category of luxury vehicles. To me you really have 3 tiers

Basic consumer brands - Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Honda, Volkswagen, etc...
Luxury brands - Lincoln, BMW, Mercedes, Acura, Lexus, Cadillac, etc...
High Luxury brands - Porsche, Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, RR, Bugatti, etc...

I'm looking for a fun single car <$10k that I can replace my current daily (5000lb automatic truck) with

Situation:

-I do have a garage but its 30 mins away: I'd like to keep it for "wrenching" and not car storage. I barely drove my last project car because it became a hassle to swap cars if I wanted to take it out for a nice drive
-I want something common/shitty enough I'm okay sacrificing it to the salt gods so I can actually have something fun for 4-5 months of the year + street park since I live in a NYC Apartment
-It has to be fun to drive
-Reliable so I'm not wrenching on it 24/7 (my last project car turned me into a Master Tech...to the point I stopped enjoying it)
-Practical enough I can do groceries in it (eliminates Miatas but I'd still love a NC2)

What have I found?

-Focus STs (actually not a horrible option, I'm just not crazy about them?)

-Fiesta STs (love these, but often I find them really rusty or with headgasket issues at higher miles)

-S197 3v Mustang GTs (there was a mint one I posted a few weeks back I wish I bought, great cars but 90% of the ones I find are clapped or have 120-170k+ miles)

-MK6 GTis (I like these but I'm turned off by how bad the EA888 Gen 1/2 can get, might go for a 06-08 FSI EA113 instead if its cheap and not rotted)

-Mazdaspeed 3 (found a decent one earlier that needed a clutch, but these seem as bad as WRXs to own and blow up)

-A million turbo Subarus (I had a stock '05 WRX that didn't blow up at one point from 100-150k miles, it wasn't bad but I'm not sure if I'd try one again unless I found a bone stock Legacy GT/Forester XT 5spd)

What I'm not considering
-N52 BMWs (oil pump chain + potential to be really expensive really fast + need like $3-4000 in parts like a LSD and M suspension parts to be "fun")
-Civic Sis (impossible to find used without salvage/rotted/way overpriced)
-VQ Nissans like a G37 6mt (get stolen + a lot like the BMWs that don't feel "nice" without mods and can get $$$ to fix)

C4s are still a ton of fun, and they aren't really bad cars. I know there are few gremlins.

>econo cuck boxes
I am wanting a hybrid crossover as a low expense vehicle to replace my shitbox. Crossover only because I want the extra height to get blinded less by LED lowbeams.

what's funny of course is my shitbox wagon gets 30mpg and the cars I am looking at get only 36-40mpg. I used to get 40mpg in my 2000 neon that broke timing belt and fucked the cylinder head.

I hate interference engines.

yeah. I become a crossover cuck myself. I live in Indiana and everyone drives a fucking truck, and the roads suck.

the semis on the highway are overwhelming. it sucked driving my fiesta St between semi trucks.

I live in NYC so a Fiesta works for me for street parking. My current daily is a 2011 Pathfinder and sometimes there's spots I can't fit in even though it's pretty compact for a BoF 12mpg SUV. My bigger issue is that the 1.6 Ecoboosts can get headgasket issues and half the time it's due to a cracked head or block. That and they're built like shit.

I'm flying to Florida in a week so I might bring something back, definitely gonna keep a eye on Facebook Marketplace down there. Facebook Market FUCKING sucks because I keep getting listings from 2-6 months ago.
