Is it unrealistic, or even delusional for a 29 year old who knows nothing about cars, to become a professional car salesman?

I hear it's good money, and I'm willing to do the reading it would take to learn, if this isn't a delusional pipe dream.

Would I need some special certification or college degree to sell cars? Does it matter if I sell used or at a dealership.

What sorts of things should I be considering?

The less you know about cars is likely the better, your average NPC that doesn't even know the amount of cylinders in their car isn't interested in some autist spouting 0-60 times, talking about double wishbone vs. macpherson suspension or any of that bullshit.
The size of the infotainment screen, amount of "initial quality" JD Power awards, the amount of cupholders and "best in class residual value" are more important to your average dealership car buyer than anything like horsepower or what wheels are being driven.
Your average enthusiast, if they even go to a dealer at all, is usually there to look at a car they already saw online, and chances are they already know more about it than the seller does so the salesmen doesn't need to do a thing.

It’s all pop psychology cheap two bit mind games. They don’t care if you even have a drivers license, if you can deliver the lines and close the deals you can do quite well for yourself. I knew a guy who put three kids through college selling used cars and he couldn’t give a fuck about any of them.

It's a shitpost, but there is some truth here:
>Honesty
The stealership meme is popular for a reason, but if you're working for anything more than a two-bit salvage car flipper then you really do need to be reasonably honest with any non-retards
>Integrity
This is actually important, selling someone a car that doesn't work without at least telling them reflects extremely poorly on the dealership. It's more the mechanics' fault than anything but the salesman will almost always get called out as well on the PR side
>Sociability
No shit

you need charisma and presence
from the lowest used car lot, to the highest-end supercar dealers, all salesmen just rattle off bullshit stats and smile

Also, the pay is shit, its only good if youre on a good rate for commission, and youre able to shift lots of cars per week/month, which isnt very likely if youre not very charismatic etc.

Like I said, its something you gotta work out
It'll be different based on where you work, how many hours, whats the minimum, whats the average, what kind of dealership youre looking at working for, what their commission scheme is

an independent family-run second hand dealer will probably have slightly lower wages, but massive turnover of cars (with families buying 2nd cars, or parents buying their kids first beater etc) and commission will be relatively low, but the quantity of units shifted will balanced it out

on the other hand, working at a top end dealership like Porsche or even Mercedes, you may very well be on the same hourly rate, possibly slightly higher, but only sell 1 car every 3 weeks, and then get a higher commission, and return for upselling features to the customer, i.e. sports trim, different seats, coloured alloys, etc.

I've heard of guys doubling their salary via commission in both types

They will train you and if you gain an interest research on your own you'll be far ahead of the shoe-in losers who work there. It's more sales tactics than knowing about cars, but if you actually know cars you can flatter whatever car you're selling by stating all the good features about it and bad features about competitors.

Ive never seen a car salesman who does very well for himself. You'd have to get into selling used cars yourself and even then you have to hunt for good deals and flip fucked up cars then deal with any warranty issues and lemons.

Are you British?

Decades ago, I vaguely remember reading older British poems use terms like "for ever" rather than "forever", and I feel like I may have seen "of course" instead of "ofcourse" a few times.

And, of course, the use of single-quotes over double-quotes seemed common in those poetry books.

I got hired as a salesman at a Stellantis dealership. 40k base, 8 cars a month quota. Giving me about a month of training. These guys good to work for or am I about to be used and abused? OP, listen to me. All these people are bitter incels who think other people got their success through bullshit rather than hardwork.

You can't bullshit your way into a better life. There's no magic shortcut. Selling cars is a profession, and it is done by professionals. You would be extremely arrogant to think you could skim the brochure, and walk in with the same level of expertise as people who have been in the business for 30 years.

If cars were your passion, I'd say give it a shot, but if you're just gonna fuck around wasting everyone's time, I'd say you're better off washing the cars, than selling them.

yes
as a dealership car salesman you only need to know like 3 models your brand is trying to push
any by "knowing" I mean "remember the model name"

used car sales man needs to be a lot more savvy about model years, engine specs, flaws and teething issues that show up often, figuring out what's broken/worn out and how to hide all of these things, dress it up pretty so that you can actually sell shitbox for higher price than what you bought it for

99% of people I've met who worked hard are making less today after inflation than they were 20 years ago. Usually hard workers are kept in place until they're at death's door. It's being chummy with someone above you, showing leadership, or having skills with planning, math, or computers that gets you ahead almost all of the time.

You make tons of money selling expensive ones like Mercs and BMWs.Those are coveted positions that don't go to junior sales people. So if you want a career you have to start in a lesser dealer like Honda or GM and put in years to get experience.
Selling expensive cars isn't the hard part - the people walking in there already know what they want and you just need to haggle on price a bit. It's dumb normies who buy Subarus that don't know what they're doing and you can sell them different models.

Merc and BMW buyers just want the badge, it's your job to sell it to them for as much as possible.

How do you get into football at that age? The commercials are so bad, and if you try to pre-record and fast forward, there's too many fakeouts, where the commercial break seems to end and you see the camera pointed at the football stands, and it says "The NFL is brought to you with limited commercial interruption by ...." and then it goes back to commercial. Last time I tried to watch a football game, I gave it 3 hours of my time, and realized I'm no where near finished with it, and gave up. That might have been 15 years ago.
