Why isn't there ever a thread when I need to post edition
Driver side CV axle is making noise. Can I save it by replacing new boots and grease or is it just better to buy a brand new one? I've read aftermarket CV axles are really shit and a brand new OEM costs almost 1k
Just replace it. Your already halfway there to replace the boot+ grease anyways just for it to shit itself a week later and then we're back to square one
>>28446093I would like to but a new OEM cost nearly 1k and aftermarket sucks. I'm kinda fucked here
Are bugs attracted to something in ceramic coat or something? Noticed little bugs constantly sitting on it.
is it smart to pay 1k for a part when the car cost 3k?
What's the best way to fix a clear coat scratch?
>>28446439no b/c if the part fails you're -2k (2 parts) which you could put towards a car that isn't screwed up as a downpayment
>>28446098what? a cardone or trakmotive CV axle should be like $150 and won't give you any problems. replacement is pretty easy too if you skip the ball joints and just unbolt the strut instead. can be done inside of an hour.
>>28446458From what I've read aftermarket axles are usually shit. I live in a very cucked nation where everything is expensive so OEM is price gouging. I'm going to have to make do and hope aftermarket is ok. Like a retard I had already bought the boots before making this thread. Also I wrench so it's not a problem.
>>28446439If its a good, old car its worth it.
If its just a shitbox then no.
Has anyone put a cayenne V8 into 924? Iโm craving a project
How am I supposed to hook up an old tachometer to a car that is old but not as old as the tachometer? The car has no tachometer signal wire as far as I know, hooking the tachometer wire into the various wires plugged into the coil didn't do anything, and while I have the wire tied in a knot around the coil wire, it looks ridiculous.
Dad has a 1995 GMC Sierra 2500 long bed with a 454 that he used to trailer cars but now just sits in the back of his shop. Been wanting to buy it off of him but its got some issues with the only serious one being that three out of the four brakes don't work (or so I'm told). It's got a lot of sentimental value so I'm wondering what I should offer him for it and if it's worth fixing up. Not too long ago he tried to sell it to a buddy for 2,700 bucks but they decided to pass on it. It's either this or I keep searching for a crew cab C/K truck.
>>28446089 (OP)What oil should I put in this bottle jack? Will any oil do?
>>28447083Believe it or not, hydraulic jack oil.
What's a reasonable price for painting a back and front lip? Both pretty small and only the back would need fitting. The front isn't fibreglass and the fitment is perfect.
>>28447237that seems cheap
>>28447006>1995 GMC Sierra 2500that's the same platform as the chevy silverado 1500 right? i still see these things everywhere, every day in the rust belt where everything else from that era has pretty much disintegrated. my neighbor also has one that never seems to break down, and i've personally helped replace a trans rear seal on one that was neglected as hell by it's boomer owner but still ran good, they must be damned near immortal. i'd say it's probably worth fixing up and since it's you're dad's you'll know it's history. might just need some breaklines or pads. as for the price i wouldn't be able to throw out any reasonable numbers since trucks are pretty inflated here, but there's always a chance he'd cut you a family deal.
>car is pulling to the right
>Tire shows no signs of uneven wear
Maybe the brakes? I had the lower control arms replaced a while ago and obviously aligned. Could the caster split have come undone? Would that show uneven wear?
My father and his older car guy friends (mid 50s to mid 60s) say rim and wheel, but myself and my car guy friends (mid 20s to mid 30s) say wheel and tire. I wonder when this switched. Does anyone know? What do you normally say?
I have two questions:
1. Why is a remapped engine "better" than a normal one? Like, why does the factory tune the engine "worse" than some kid with a laptop?
2. Why is automatic transmission so different from a manual? Couldn't it be just a manual transmission that is automatic instead of a bunch of planetary gears and stuff?
>>28447386Rim + tire = wheel
>>28447386This
>>28447636Tire is the rubber part. Rim is the metal part. Wheel is the rim + tire. Anybody who says otherwise is wrong.
When you take a CDL course which instructs you the way the federal government wants, they clearly state this and you will fail your test if you donโt know it.
If these Trainfags on youtube are so insistent that cars are worse than trains, instead of replacing infrastructure, why donโt they just advocate for cars to act more like trains? As in, auto control in congested downtown districts and convoy coordination of trucks and autos on interstate highway systems? Yeah I guess it means people canโt go whatever speed they want in those places, but le funny anarchist can just hack the system with their Kroptkin powers and be le anarchy in the ever-onward evolution of tactics.
>>28447607>why does the factory tune the engine "worse"primarily emissions and fuel economy. you tune it to get more power because you aren't federally required to adhere to the same EPA and CAFE standards car makers are. same goes for catalytic convertors and egr/carbon traps. technically you can't remove your cat entirely (legally) but you can get """high flow""" ones.
>>284476072. Try googling "automated manual", that's what you're asking about. They have their pros and cons.
Traditional auto trannies were made different, they employ a torque multiplication device instead of a clutch, for which the "slipping" mode of operation is normal (provided you can dump the heat from the fluid somewhere), for a clutch it is not. In some modes of operation that is highly beneficial.
They also use hydraulically-operated clutch packs to start and stop parts of the planetary gearset (they have several of those), that also has some pros (like being easier to implement and generally more robust) and cons (traditionally being slower and not easily controllable without electronics) compared to the mechatronically-operated synchronized gear mesh.
Adding to that, I believe the mechatronics robust enough to automate a mechanical gearbox in a mass production car appeared relatively recently, like a decade or two ago. I remember late gens MR2/MRS (that's around 2000) suffering from that and being converted from automated manual to three-pedal manual, and the issues with related dual-clutch gearboxes continued well into the 2010 thanks to German engineering.
>>28447684I actually donโt give a shit what the federal government uses internally, I work for the feds in my professional life as an engineer and their nomenclature is complete shit compared to private industry standard
So anyway does anyone have an answer to the question? When did popular language go away from rim+tire = wheel?
Itโs obviously better because some wheels have spokes and the rim is an clearly identifiable portion of the wheel
Is there a best place to get a used manual car to fuck around with? I am not a car guy but learned how to drive manual last year and it's kind of fun. I just want something I can fuck around in and go driving for fun some times with, not a daily driver. Even something small like a mini coop would be cool. Is it even worth it?
>>28446089 (OP)>acquire 93 octane ethanol-free 5 gallon gas can from next door neighbor>let it sit outside on the porch for approximately 8 months>start smelling gasoline fumes>some fucking rodent chewed on the outside of the can and poked a hole in it>panic dump the entire can into my car and lawnmower instead of losing it all and letting it soak into my wooden deckIt should still be good, right? It had a very strong fresh gasoline smell. It's definitely been less than a year.
>>28447900Wheel and rim are interchangeable, they're the same thing. Whether or not a wheel has a tire attached to it is unimportant. Most wheels have tires, some don't. A tire is only the rubber part. A wheel is what the tire sits on. If someone says "The wheel fell off!" they're referring to the whole wheel coming loose, not the tire itself coming off.
>>28447355>that's the same platform as the chevy silverado 1500 right?Same but some parts are beefier, and it was K1500 not Silverado at the time iirc

how shitty is it to repair C pillar damage like this/how expensive is it to get a shop to do it? fucking branch fell on my car, punched a hole in the rear window too so I already replaced that to the tune of ~$400.
I know it probably can't be just heated up and pulled because it's relatively small diameter and sorta deep, but could I hammer it back out from the inside if I pull the trim? I'd still have to touch up the paint after, assuming I didn't damage it more while trying to address the dent
>>28447962This isnโt the question Iโm asking the board has gone illiterate. When! When did the common nomenclature change
How much hp in a car equal to 1 hp in a bike? How much hp in a car is necessary to be as fast as a 15, 45, 70, 120 and 200 hp bike?
>>28448107Horsepower is the same unit of measurement. It's a mix of things like power to weight ratio and aerodynamics. im afraid you're going to have to use math.
>>28447087Cool well ima use ATF because Ace didnt have any of this mysterious hydraulic jack oil.
why is advance and auto zone so fucking useless
you go there to get an overpriced part, its half used in the box. then you need something else and they cant get it. meanwhile amazon has it. your whole gimmick is auto parts and yet you stick to fucking dorman.
>>28448107HP is just a measurement of the work rate of an engine:
HP=(engine speed (measured by rpm) ร torque) รท5252
Just horsepower isn't enough to determine how fast a car is. These vehicles, for example, have the same HP, but the truck produces more torque while being slower, while the porsche has a faster but weaker engine. Gear ratio also affects the speed.
If you want a more accurate notion you should consider weight to power ratio, a lmp car will have something close to 1:1, while a 3 cylinder shitbox will have something like 25:1. Bikes probably follow this pattern, maybe.
>>28447968Silverado/Sierra was a trim package for the C/K series before they made it official. My dad's truck has the Sierra trim but is a normal C2500 since it doesn't have 4-wheel drive. Which is good because I hate working on 4-wheel drive stuff since it just gets in the way.

How bad of a idea is a Mazdaspeed 3 with a blown clutch for $4200? Its rust free with a timing chain and turbo done recently, and the seller wants it gone asap. 125k miles.
Just not sure if I have the time or energy to do the clutch and I kinda feel this is one of those cars that's nice when everything works, but will be eternally unreliable like a GTI or WRX of the same years at 100k+ miles.
>>28448526>18 year old Mazdaspeed with a blown clutch>$4200something something fools and their money
You and I both know that the clutch isn't the only issue with this car. If you want to inherit this guy's problems, be my guest.
I NEED FUCKING HELP! I turned my 90s civic's steering wheel, equipped with power steering, while the car was off and a bunch of fluid spilled all over the ground and now the power steering pump whines constantly! WHAT DO I DO NOW?
A whining sound from a power steering pump can be caused by several issues, including low fluid levels, trapped air, or a failing pump. Low fluid can introduce air into the system, while a failing pump may experience internal wear and tear causing noise.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
1. Low Power Steering Fluid:
The most common cause of a whining noise is low power steering fluid.
A low fluid level can allow air to get into the system, causing a whine as air bubbles are compressed and released.
Check the fluid level in the reservoir and top it off if necessary.
2. Trapped Air:
Trapped air in the power steering system can cause a whine as the pump tries to move the fluid.
Air can get into the system through leaks or loose connections.
To fix trapped air, you may need to flush the system and bleed the lines.
3. Failing Power Steering Pump:
A failing pump can experience internal wear and tear, such as worn vanes, bearings, or gears, which can cause noise.
A failing pump may also leak fluid, making the noise worse.
If the fluid level is maintained and the whine persists, the pump may need to be replaced.
Troubleshooting Steps:
Check the fluid level: Make sure the reservoir is topped off with the correct fluid.
Listen for other noises: Is there a squealing, groaning, or clicking noise? These could also indicate a problem with the pump or belt.
Inspect for leaks: Look for leaks around the pump, hoses, and connections.
Consider air in the system: If you suspect air, flush the system and bleed the lines.
Professional inspection: If the problem persists, have a mechanic inspect the pump for internal damage.
Pulled engine, went to take p.plate/clutch/flywheel off and got pranked by gravity.
Can I milk another 10-20k miles out of this, or is it a junk disk now? (2nd pic incoming)
>>28448447>>28448449hard to say, could be a freeze plug in the engine, a coolant line that runs into some part of the engine, or a bleeder valve, I think these engines have a bunch of bleeder valves. if you can't get in there to see get a cheap endoscope camera to get in there to look for the drip
>>28448565add more fluid, it's probably low
if that doesnt do it there is probably air in the system, top up the fluid then turn it lock to lock like 10 times to purge the air out
>>28448708>>28448711thats not a big deal at all, i would use it
>>28448788Thanks! adding it to the list. So far the possibilities are:
>Heater core hoses (yay)>Coolant bypass pipe + O-rings>Throttle body coolant line>Intake manifold gasket>Head gasket (suicide)
>>28447737This, with the addition of peak firing pressures and maximum exhaust temperatures. There's some safety margin on those usually, but not much. Also the engine will survive some events over the max. PFP but not sustained operation, just like the turbo will take excessive exhaust temperature until its heat capacity is filled. The factory wouldn't tune the engine to grenade at the smallest irregularity but the random 'kid with a laptop'...

>>28451299Left-overs from production process
I think they form because the air-holes in the mould fill with some rubber once the air is fully displaced, thus also ensuring that the rubber can flow everywhere and a little excess can be added just to ensure it produces no void.
They are both harm- and useless.

What is the name of that huge triangle ish shaped spoiler thing some pick up trucks will put over the cabin?
What is this rubber bit between the roof and the rest of the frame for? It doesn't block out water or anything, underneath you can see that its just a metal groove, there's no join there.
Rebuilding a Duramax motor with a buddy and I'm wondering if I should hit it with the steel wire wheel on the pneumatic die grinder or go out of my way to buy some roloc bristle discs. Before me another friend did the heads on it and the crankshaft broke in two different places when they first started it lol
>>28452851The groove is where the side panels are joined to the center roof panel. To forego it entirely would make for really fancy and expensive manufacturing techniques.
Now, just just having that groove there looks dumb, so often these strips are added as a design element / accent. They also prevent grime from collecting in there too much and may have a minor aerodynamic effect (not so much for drag but for wind-noise).
anybody replaced the rubber evap hoses? Replacing my evap valve no longer works and I'm pretty sure I put holes in the 12yr rubber hoses.

How do I know if the 12V battery on my newly bought used car needs changing? Just wait for it to die?
>>28454165Measure its capacity and/or voltage drop under load.
>>28454165What other anon said, voltage drop test, but you can stop by any auto parts store and them test it in like 2 minutes. You can also check for a date on the battery too, depending on the type and where you live, it could be a good idea to change without even testing it just to be safe.
>>28448189>why is advance and auto zone so fucking uselessAutoZone was always fucking useless and Advance was designed around sales of car oriented products with the parts as a sideline. Advance's somewhat more useful division is CarQuest and those stores tend to be where the independent shops get their parts so they're not as oriented around impulse sales of car care products. There's a CQ not far from here that's straight out of the 60's. Even the counter guys so it's not exactly customer friendly if you don't at least know make/model/year. OTOH they know how to find things that their Advance counterparts wouldn't even know where to begin to look for.
tl;dr for Autozone/Advance/O'reilly's keep it light and for better seek out the local jobbers like CarQuest and NAPA. Or the local wholesaler (but you gotta have your shit straight using them because they won't hold your hand. They're expecting professionals).
Iโm going to buy a car today and havenโt planned anything except that Iโm probably gonna get a Toyota. Budget is 20-35k. Canโt decide on if I should get a Supra, an suv, a sedan. Please give advice, lowkey I like other brands more than Toyota but my family has had so many that lasted so long I canโt really justify not getting one. Also itโs gonna be a gift so price doesnโt bother me so much as long as in budget.
Will adding rubbing alcohol to my washer fluid damage anything inside?
>>28454922No. Washer fluids for winter usually have methyl or isopropyl alcohol in them.
So recently I got myself an 05 Mustang GT.
I had it probably about a month or 2, then checked the oil and it was low.
My brother told me I was letting it rev too high before I changed gears, and that could be why.
I usually let it go to 3k RPMโs before shifting. Is this ok? What about the oil situation? It doesnโt smoke or n4dananything.
>>28454925I didn't think so since I've done it for a few years now, but I wanted to make sure.
Definitely helps in the winter.
>>28454935When to shift is more of a feeling than anything. Some cars used to have so-called "idiot lights." Being an '05, yours may. What RPM to shift at varies based on the vehicle. I shift my car about every 10 mph, but my dad's truck needs out of first at like 5 mph.
Make sure you don't have a leak somewhere first. Stay with the simple common shit.

>>28453001yes, they might make an assembly for your car, check a parts catalog, or you can just cobble it together with proper size rubber hoses, get something that is fuel resistant and not that cheap ass amazon hose.
>>28453880yes, tape measure doesn't tell you anything really, if both of your tires are off, you won't have an accurate baseline.
get two strings parallel to your car, I do it by putting notches in 3/4 8 foot pvc pipes, throwing them on jackstands, and running strings parallel to the car. make sure the strings are parallel *to each other* and adjust. takes 10 minutes to setup and will be as accurate as a $50,000 alignment rack.

Need help figuring out the source of a noise in a hybrid. I'm driving a 2025 Camry LE and at highway speeds (occassionally lower, but infrequently) there is a sound that I can almost only describe as "jingling". It isn't grinding or thumping, I don't even know if I would say it's metallic, maybe very slightly. It isn't very loud, but it is persistent and sounds like it's coming from below the driver/passenger seat.
I'm tempted to think it's due to the battery charging/discharging power, but I can't find anyone else reporting anything similar with any hybrid. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just bought OEM wiper blades for my car. I entered my VIN against the part numbers and they were all correct. The last time I bought OEM blades, they missed the bottom of the windshield both up and down. I think I read somewhere to just leave them out in the sun because trying to bend the arm doesn't help.
The J-hook where the wiper attaches is also kind of rusty, should I wipe them or file them wtih something?
I do not operate a diesel vehicle but do know green handles are only for those trucks and won't fit otherwise so you don't accidently fuck up your engine. My question is about DEF. Couldn't figure out for the life of me why the company truck I borrowed to grab some supplies had a blue cap and narrow intake.

At gas station there are all the pumps and picture related display where you select language and where to pay (with card or at inside store). Walked by the gas station and took pictures.
Do I first
>A) Select how I want to pay, take the pump, put it into car, refuel & pay
Or
>B) Take the pump, put it into the car, refuel, and then select how to pay.

I got an OEM o ring from Subaru, guess I'll just get an AC o ring set from advance auto parts. Maybe that leak is causing the expansion valve to not open/close properly. May as well replace it anyway since I already ordered the part.
Anyway, can't confirm it's the expansion valve but it's the only part that makes sense. Before replacing the O rings, even when fully recharged the compressor kicked on but still no cold air. It's torqued to spec too.
I feel retarded asking this but here goes:
>Car died on me and wouldn't turn over even after jumping
>Took out battery and had auto parts store test it and it's very dead
>I just bought the car and was too stupid to look at the date before recycling it so I assumed it was just old
>Put in new battery, go for short (10 minute) drive
>Disconnect negative terminal before letting it sit overnight because I started to think maybe it's a parasitic draw
>In the morning it doesn't turn over
>Try to jump it with an admittedly not fully charged battery pack (since I used it to jump the old battery a few times at this point). Lights turn on so I know it isn't completely dead.
>It turns over rapidly for a few seconds, is silent for a second, repeat
>Give up and go to charge battery pack, based on the amount of time it took to charge I assume it was close to dead and am praying that's why it didn't start this morning
>In the meantime my multimeter is reading ~10.5V
Am I fucked or just retarded? I also have these really old terminals that look very clean but are clearly hodge-podged together by the previous owner (random hardware- one is hold on with a 13mm and other is a 9mm). It almost looks like they might be battery terminals for marine batteries (they look like pic related)? I'm not sure that even matters but it sort of a pain in the ass to get the terminals on/off and they seem to fit real tight and I can't always get them to sit flush with the post if that makes sense? Should I just change the terminals?
Anyway any advice regarding keeping my shitbox's electrical system in good condition is appreciated. I was surprised even though I disconnected the negative terminal that it still seemingly drained the battery overnight. It is an old car (late 80s).

>>28457174It's the urea for an SCR system to convert NOx.
Very few new diesel vehicles left that meet emissions without that, mostly just heavy off-road machinery. And even those are getting them it seems.
Sadly, without mods your engine will go into limp-mode if it runs out of DEF, not because it needs it but because it can't reach legal exhaust limits without, so it forces you to refill.
Up to EU6b or equivalent some made it with just a lean NOx trap and no SCR but that was more cycle-beating than working. Barely a chance nowadays. More new diesels have two SCRs now than none.
>>28457317So it is literally an after market governor that hamstrings your engine unless you put in DEF to meet some arbitrary EPA emission standards?
How is that not just a shadow green tax? Unless burning diesel without it is doing 1,000x more pollutant harm then any random regular gas ICE vehicle this seems like a tremendous government overreach.
Did a bit more research after asking so I now know that putting the DEF in with the fuel will utterly fuck the engine during the combustion process. However if it is only in the exhaust and is regulated by how hard the engine is running then it literally cannot directly impact the performance of the vehicle. Except with artificial limiters put in place.
>>28457324It sucks, yeah.
Apparently quite common for easter european trucks to have a signal generator there the pretends to the ECU that it's working when it isnt.
Can't do that in the western world though.
DEF does NOT go into fuel under any circumstances. It goes straight into the exhaust, behind the oxidation catalyst.
>>28457261Well shit. UV showed a significant link at the O ring on the high pressure fitting. Replaced it, still leaking. Before it was holding refrigerant and compressor would kick in. Now, soon as it gets to the green the pressure just drops rapidly and compressor doesn't kick on. No visible leaks now...
>>28456586I would be like 90% sure that's it. Look for loose fasteners or hangers along the exhaust as well. Assuming it's front wheel drive there's very little else it could be.

Messy, but not bad.

Clean them

Regrease, new boots.
If the joints are damaged just plan on replacing them or buy a rebuild kit.

Does it seem likely that they neglected doing oil changes for this entire period they had it (just over a year and 25k miles) and then just dumped it at an auction because they knew they fucked the engine?
Are there any obvious signs I could look for if I were to go check out the car in person? It would be cool if they kept receipts of them purchasing oil and oil filters, but I doubt that's the case.

Installing a train horn: yea or nay?
I really want one, but I have a Juke so room is limited.
Second question: if I figure out where to cram everything, I've thought about wiring a switch in so I can still use the regular horn, or I can switch to the train horn to make a point. I don't feel like that would be too difficult to do.
Third: putting the horns on the roof: bad idea?
>>28460010>Installing a train horn: yea or nay?Personal preference, I say yay. Train/air horns are dope as fuck.
>Second question: if I figure out where to cram everything, I've thought about wiring a switch in so I can still use the regular horn, or I can switch to the train horn to make a point. I don't feel like that would be too difficult to do.Not really a question, but whatever. If I were in your shoes, I'd put a push-button on the dashboard completely separate from your car's existing horn. No need to complicate things with a switch over circuit or anything.
>Third: putting the horns on the roof: bad idea?No bad, per se, but it'd look pretty dumb. I wouldn't do it myself, but if you like that look, then go nuts.

My alignment is off and my tires are wearing unevenly on the inside
I don't want to spend money on an alignment right now because i am about to replace most of the front suspension in the next month.
Could i relieve some of this uneven wear by overinflating the tires a bit?
>>28460396What else are you going to drive with a third camshaft? There are only intake and exhaust valves to push. Other things like a distributor, vacuum pump, or mechanical fuel pump are entirely capable of being driven by one of the existing camshafts.
>>28460399Go somewhere with a warranty for their alignments like firestone or pep boys, if you bring it back within 90 days or whatever the warranty period is you don't pay again for the second alignment after your front end rebuild.
>>28460403But why can't there be 6 or even 8 valves in the same cylinder?

>>28460408Ok, thank you for the explanation.
>>28460403I didn't think about the alignment warranty. Thanks, i should be able to find time to get that done
>>28460407You've gotta fit all those valves in the same circle, with enough space between them for the head to not crack from being too thin. The more valves you have, the smaller they have to be, and eventually you'll actually have less area for air to travel through than if you had fewer, larger valves. Plus the extra complication in the valvetrain costs a lot more for diminishing returns, which is hard to justify for mass produced engines.
>>28460399No.
But you're going to have to buy new tires anyway after fixing the issue that causes uneven wear.
Once the tires start wearing evenly, you already have the inner side with less tread than the rest of the tire and it'll be gone soon

>>28461741You use a ruler or caliper to set the toe in by the difference in distance between the front of the wheel to the string and the rear of the wheel to the string. 1mm of toe in on each side will work with most cars, but you can look up the actual toe spec and convert the degrees of toe in to inches or mm and go off that if you want to set it exactly. An example of the calculation:
https://robrobinette.com/ConvertToeInchesToDegrees.htm
And yes it can be every bit as accurate as lasers, it's literally just taking measurements, the lasers don't have a magical ability, they're just faster.
>>28461813yes, just don't blast it into the intake and you'll want to put a bag over your alternator and if your fuse box is in the engine bay then make sure the cover is on properly
>>28461741and you don't set camber with the strings, you can use a set of something like tenhulzen plates, or you can make something similar out of a straight steel plate, some standoffs, and a digital angle gauge. You zero the angle gauge to the ground, then use the plate to hold it parallel to the wheel, that will give you the current camber, you then jack the car up, put a magnetic camber gauge on the wheel and adjust the camber until you see the difference you need on the magnetic camber gauge.

I do remember some Ford motors do burn oil slowly. It's common enough, and doesn't mean it's clapped out just yet. My 99 corolla burns oil.

Why pushrods have more low end torque than overhead camshaft? I heard that it was because it just uses two valves per cylinder, but couldn't the same effect be achieved by using a SOHC?
My dad's retiring and losing his lease on his car and I'm gonna give him my old tiguan, but I wanted to buy a newer (2020-2025) golf. I was considering getting a gti or an r, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone talk about or drive an R
Is it worth the extra 10 grand for 4WD or no? Kinda spoiled with the 4wd on the tiguan but I'm unsure if it's worth the extra money
I can't drive a manuel
>>28468959I have no firsthand experience but all of the reviews online and videos really say the R shines with the awd and extra power. making nearly 360 wheel at the dyno apparently higher than what a google search says its rated at.
>>28468704That looks like a good candidate. Thank you for contributing to my mental illness.
>>28468923Tuning, mostly. Pushrod engines typically don't rev high or breathe efficiently at high revs, so instead of chasing peak power you're better off focusing on tuning for torque at lower revs.

>>28469015But why would you prefer pushrods over SOHC?
>>28468085>>28468704Nissan Leaf didnt come out till 2010 according to wiki. So thats probably not it unless someone's been editing the car in the glasses.
Considering buying a shitbox with a sun-ravaged roof. Is it worth getting Maaco on the job? I have no idea what rates are looking like right now.
>>28469044>But why would you prefer pushrods over SOHC?Pushrods are cheaper and more compact, that's about it. The advantage over SOHC isn't that big on inline engines (which is why SOHC I4 and I6 designs were more common than pushrod ones in the last 50 years) but on V6 and V8 engines you still only need one camshaft to run both cylinder banks - a SOHC V engine requires double the camshafts and the chain/gear/belt drive to them becomes more complicated.
Of course in modern petrol engines you'd prefer VVT DOHC with variable intake runners, unless you're trying to cram a V8 into a small engine bay.
I have picked up 3 2nd hand compressors over time. Time to respray my 4runner. This is my air setup currently, any sprayheads tell me why this wouldn't work? I will probably do panel by panel so I don't abuse the poor compressors anyways.

Anyone know where I could find instructions on how to break in DFC rotors and pads? I found a forum post suggesting its extra hard/painful: https://autogeekonline.net/threads/geomet-geospec-element3-etc-coated-rotors-break-in.126366/
But I checked the site and couldn't find instructions and in fact it says it's "minimal": https://www.dynamicfriction.com/products/5000-advanced-brake-pads
So who's right, the forum autists or the company? I'm honestly willing to trust the autists but I don't have any instructions to work off of.
>>28470836There's this stick thingie in the engine you can pull out to see how much oil it has. Pretty handy.
>>28470773that's a bit concerning. were you consistent about when you measured each time? When the engine is dead cold and all of the oil from the cams and etc is in the pan, it will generally be higher than when you check it 3 minutes after it was just running.
+losing a QUART in two weeks, you should notice it somewhere. The drain bolt or the filter? Or even smell it when it does leak out and touch the block...

>>28471508Probably not. Try Hybrid Assistant app, it might have a HUD mode or something.
Should I install new brake pads when replacing brake rotors because of wear? I usually do both at the same time, but for this car the OEM manual has a technical advice bulletin with the following:
>Do not replace serviceable brake pads when replacing brake discs. There is no technical reason that could justify a replacement.
>Replace the brake discs only.
>Do not replace the brake pads.
>No warranty claims will be accepted for unnecessary replacements of brake pads
>>28472199If the pads are fine and there's no abnormal wear pattern, then there's not really any real reason to change them, you just need to bed them back in on your new disc. Nothing is stopping you from changing them if it makes you feel better, however, you'd just be spending money sooner than you'd need to.

My mom's 2013 Wrangler Sport radio cuts in and out about every three seconds. Internet suggested removing fuse 97 overnight as well as holding in the volume and tune knobs. Neither one made any difference.
Is there any other troubleshooting we can do? She doesn't want to have to open the dash until she's sure of what's wrong and the fix for it, or to replace the radio.
>>28472203Thanks. Needed some reassurance, most places on the web recommend replacing pads and rotors together.
>>28472026I ended up just picking up a "new" caliper from autozone to be "safe" but would still be curious to know the answer to this question.
>>28473203I didnt mean to put safe in quotes kek.
>>28472007that's very very not likely. Do they keep buying bargain bin alternators? the cheapest of the cheap? Even then, that is fucking sus. IS the belt being properly tensioned?
>>28472157It depends. My manual and some other cars I've owned specify that you should measure the oil level after the car has been running for a bit. Turn the engine off, and let it settle for a minute, and then measure it. So, that's what I do.
>>28472416>>28472369>>28472367That is really not good. look at those boost pressures. wastegate actuator probably. could also be the solenoid.
CJ5Z-9K378-B maybe for your car? Change that first, it's substantially cheaper and easier than a wastegate actuator.
>>28473725>CJ5Z-9K378-BLiterally hunting for this part as we speak. I find it really strange that I am not getting any codes at all. The only other part I am considering, based purely on other posts I've read, is the VVT (variable valve timing solenoid), part # CJ5Z9K378B
>>28473732>part numberoops, VVT solenoid is BE8Z6M280A
>>28473732a VVT solenoid shouldn't fuck up boost control like you're seeing. They just mess with camshaft timing / spinning by messing with oil flow. I'd be surprised if this was the cause of your issue, but who knows.
oh christ, that solenoid is actually expensive as well ($150). The one that came up first was a chingchong part on amazon for $20 which...will last who knows how long. idk how to decide whether the actuator or the solenoid is the problem.
there's also this one but I wouldn't get that just yet:BL3Z9K378A
