>went to the mechanic because my car started making a groaning noise when accelerating
>he called me and told me I needed new wheel bearings in the front of my car and the total would be $700 for each
Bros, how long can I put off getting this? That's expensive as fuck and I want to wait until this Thursday when I get paid to help lessen the impact on my wallet. Should I just get this done right away or can I wait a bit?

It needs to be done regardless. What difference does it make if it's now or when your on the side of the road.

If they're toast, not for very long and it could seize up while you're driving
But that is high, maybe check other shops for an estimate first. what kind of car is it

Do you want to risk it? Worst case scenario wheel and hub releases from bearing and you end up on three wheels destroying your undercarriage and suspension and get this your still gonna have to replace the wheel bearing.

It's urgent because if it fails it'll wreck a lot of suspension parts and possibly cause a wreck. You can buy both wheel bearings for $70 piece from vato zone and change them yourself in a few hours. Even if you have literally zero tools and have to buy a socket set from Walmart you'd save hundreds of dollars.

I don't know how mechanics can bold face lie to people like that.

>It's new so it's expensive
It isn't. Go to Rock Auto and see yourself.

Wheel bearing replacement is as easy as changing a wheel except it involves grease and beating a race and bearing in with a 2x4.

He said he has a Honda. More than likely he will need a press to fit the new bearings.

OP, you can milk it till payday but not much further than that. Also, 700 a corner is kinda expensive, find out how much is part and labor cost separately. If the part is expensive then youโ€™re kinda stuck paying for it, but if labor is expensive you could possible find another mechanic shop.

When your wheel bearing fails, the whole wheel falls off your car. Can you afford NOT to have them replaced?

Depends on the groan. I've run them 10000km howling away. It slowly gets worse.

$700 for front wheel bearings? Do em yourself and save. Or find another shop. Unbelievable what they're charging.

Often times they lie because they actually don't want to do the work. They would rather do big jobs that are longer hours rather than these tiny jobs, so $700 is their way of saying "fuck off." Or they're just being lazy.

No, fuck off quotes are a thing but for me it mattered more whether I thought I would end up "married" to the heap of shit than the size of the job.

This
I've had so many vans with a rear bearing going one time I just let it run for maybe 5-10,000km

However I should add I wasn't driving, those were my clients

This. I used to make fun of wrenchlets but now that they've wrecked the used car market by being priced out if new cars I pity them. It's essentially slavery to a mechanical device taking a 1/4 of their pay.

$700 - $800 is about what mechanics around here (midwestern city) are charging.

it's not a wrenchlet job unless it's a bolt on hub assembly. I've never done front bearings on a toyota where I didn't need my oxy acetylene torch.

OP here. I went again on Monday and they told me they were wrong and it's actually the engine and transmission shock absorbers that are causing the noise. They said the total cost between parts and labor is going to be about $1000 dollars.

you're getting shamelessly assraped

find another shop or better yet, buy a press and the other requisite tools and DIY it.

Take it to another shop, you might have to eat the diag cost of the first shop. Wheel bearings are easy to check if they are bad, now they are saying engine mounts are bad. Stinks of trying to fuck you over into multiple jobs. Lookup how to check your wheel bearing on YouTube, that will at least figure that out.
