I just found out I have a blown headgasket and the cam carriers are leaking lots of oil.

The dealership wants $6000 to fix this.

Is this repair worth it, or should I call it quits? $6000 is my entire budget if I go get a loan. I dont have any more money besides that to buy anything new. Do I spend the money to fix this car and try and ride it out to 200000 miles before I sell it for good, or do I give up and buy a beater to ride around in until I save up the 10000 grand to buy an acceptable used car?

you should use the 6k to buy a beater corolla or civic to ride in while you save for a better car
loans are the devil
or you could fix the impreza and then see if you can try to sell it for more, then use that money for another slightly better beater
either way if you dont get a loan you're getting a "crappier" car but also you sound like u just need a car
good luck friend

Dump it obviously but don't regress into some retard-taxed piece of shit like these corolla or civic. There are plenty of really nice cars out there and corolla civic isn't any more reliable than average right now.

You should get a quote from another shop. Dealership will always be the most expensive, and there's no reason to go to one unless you have a warranty covering whatever's wrong with your car.

>stealership kikes want $6000
(They) want you to give up and Buy Another Anyway™ because stealerships are for warranty work, women with an IQ that makes them a genetic liability to the human species, and butt-chugging semen to the point even the most zealous Leftist would think you're getting off message. I fixed my '03 Outback over a weekend with hand tools for ~$300 (75 for new genuine subaru head bolts, rest was a kit with new mls headgaskets along with basically every other gasket in the engine bay which ended up being a good idea) over a weekend at ~166k miles and it's at ~194k now.
>but i am le wrenchlette
The non-stealership shop quotes I got before just doing it myself were between $2400-2800. YMMV depending on how clown world your particular corner of Retardistan has become.

Even if you go to a shop that's not ridiculously priced it'll still be a couple grand to replace that headgasket plus resurface the head. Then while they're in it they're gonna want to change the chain and guides and shit. It isn't worth the money man, just get rear ended and call insurance

>boxer engine

Lmao have fun with that, entire thing has to come out to have any clearance to pull the head. It's not $6000 worth of work though.

Fix it yourself and save a lot of money that way, seems like subbies are quite easy to work on https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p3P4ZOaZUUw

Op here

I'm paying 6000 to fix the problems, machine the head, and rebuild the engine. I live in an apartment and have like 5 tools and dont know how to do anything other than change the oil, do brakes, and that's about it. I can not rebuild this engine in my apartment car bay in 110 degree weather with no tools or experience ( I dont even know what a timing belt is or what it does)

Yes i know you all think I'm a retard, a pussy, and a dumbass. But I just need a car to get to work and to last me through grad school I dont care about anything other than that all my skill points got put into the math/computer skill tree of autism and not into the mechanical. Sorry.

Why not just sell the car as scrap for $500 and spend $6500 on an old civic or something that isn't famous for blowing headgaskets

Also ffs don't pay the dealer to do it, they're going to charge double what any other shop would

Dealership shop rate is generally more than independent shop. Call a couple independent mechanics and get quotes. They're all going to be expensive as it's an engine-out job, but I expect more in the realm of $3k.

That gets you close to break even - the speakers you can repair yourself easily for next to nothing, especially if you use junkyard parts. At that point, the car is worth more than scrap value and you can sell it privately to put toward some other non-subaru japanese shitbox for sub $6k. You're in Arizona so it's not like AWD matters.

Eh, there are mountainous areas in Arizona where people would like AWD due to snow and the occasional rain.

The car isn't worth $6k anon. Just get the $300 from the junkyard and buy something for $4-5k. You can get all that done in the week it would otherwise take get the engine pulled and rebuilt.
>I dont care about anything other than that all my skill points got put into the math/computer skill tree of autism and not into the mechanical
lmao have you seen what the fruits of the computer science skill tree reap in the last two years? Might not hurt to have some other skills as a back up. I got through undergrad and grad school working on my cars while still getting STEM meme degrees.

He's getting a STEM degree in what is most likely Pheonix. He doesn't have time to go skiing and and FWD shitbox can get him around fine in the rare inclement weather Arizona has.

If it has a "disposamatic" CVT trans, you are really pushing it - there's a very real chance that you could have the engine overhauled and the trans shits the bed, a thousand miles later.
