Hey bros, i’m a mason and have currently have 14k trailer that i tow daily using a 5.7L Dodge 2500. it has about 250k miles and just started smoking a bit so i fear that i’ll need something new. what truck should i buy? i was looking at an F250 but it has a lot of rust on the body, chassis is good though.

any recommendations on a vehicle for that towing weight? was thinking i should sell out the extra cash for a 350/3500? picture related

Unless you've been unhappy with how the 3/4 ton is handling the load then you may as well just get another one. Even that F250. If the price is right who cares if the bed is rusty?

i need to be able to drop the trailer off as i have multiple crews and trailers going at once.
>>28453025
i haven’t been unhappy with a 3/4 ton truck at all. my only concern is that my trucks are taking a beating and if i can reduce the wear with a new truck. i’d like to see if the extra price and headache of searching for one would be worth it and justify it.

Give those crews dedicated trucks.

>>28453496
that’s kind of the point of this truck. i want it dedicated to my trailers and to take the load off of my other trucks no pun intended.
>>28453784
you got psyoped. American V8 are kings of the road even in modern variants.
>>28454188
they are literally too stupid and break shit any time they use something that they don’t own personally and no i won’t get other crews. no one does better work. with taxes and insurance it’s impossible to make anything if you have in-house guys on the payroll so i had my foremen create their own LLCs because it became infeasible to have all the overhead.

i’ve had one of these before >>28453003
but the guys just wreck it, they cost too much out the gate and they are too high to be able to get trash into quickly. having multiple 14k trailers that i control where they are has been one of the best decisions i’ve made. being able to leave a dumpster on site and not carry a load every day because you need to go home is meta. also, trailer dumps are 10-15k and easy on repairs and the worst that can happen is a dead battery for the lift or a flat tire vs a total breakdown of a dump truck which stops my jobs in its tracks.

i think i’ll just look for a dedicated 350/3500 single cab or something

Towing 15k lbs daily is definitely diesel one ton territory. I would personally never fuck with a used consumer diesel especially if I had to depend on it to run a business. If you can live with a single cab you could put a hitch on something like this. Most have a Cummins 6.7 with a real actually heavy duty Allison tranny. They're surprisingly easy to drive and they wouldn't even feel that 15k lbs because they're so overbuilt. You are stuck with RWD though.

i can’t go with one of those. i need either a 3/4 or 1 ton pick up as i need tool boxes and ladder racks. i would go with a diesel but i’m with you in that i wouldn’t buy used as many people who have diesels don’t take care of them and repair costs are fucking insane for diesel compared to gas. buying new means saying buy to making any money soon.

yes, i drive trailers daily but only 4-5klbs to a job when it’s empty and 12-15k lbs when the job is done so i’m not driving it all day which is another reason why i’m not looking to go diesel.

i’m cool with a gasser. fords 6.2, rams 5.7 and 6.4 and gmc/chevy 6.0 are all proven and i’ve owned them all at some point. my question really is is which one is best and should i go for a 3500/350 rather than a 2500/250?

i liked all of my trucks and they’ve run pretty flawlessly but i want to narrow down the chance of getting a shorter which is why i lean to fords 6.2 gasser (specifically 2011-16) as those things are everywhere and still running. i found a good deal on a 250 but want to hear from others if 350 would be better for the capacity i’m towing.

they can all go to hell after the “adjusted” covid pricing. also used to have a good relationship with my gmc guy but now i just get treated like another number. picrel needs some work before she’s ready but frame and engine are solid. just needs new bearings brakes and shocks. engine has 60k miles on a 2016 250 for $15k but don’t want to pull the trigger yet as i’m trying to see if i should get a 350/3500

if you aren't going past 15k a 250 is fine, 350's are really only needed if you are going 17k lbs+

if you haven't had issue before and aren't planning to haul a fifth wheel or past 17k stick with what you're looking at

i know a 250 would be fine but a 350 would be better either way less stress and wear and therefore last longer though right?

is the rate of wearing on one compared to the other significant enough to upgrade as i will be maxing out a 250 daily?

meh
if you are within the tow spec the additional capacity isn't worth the extra cost
if anything go with a diesel if you want a less stressed drivetrain

thanks bro. i’ve been doing some research. other than the axles there isn’t much difference. really just comes down to engine options. due to cost and maintenance i will likely stick with a gasser especially because i’m buying used.

We pulled a 12k load nearly every day for 20 years doing concrete work with a 24v cummins 3/4 ton. It's retired to relatively light duty now but its still going strong with unopened motor, gearbox, t-case, and axles at 460k miles. 3 clutches, 2 turbos, 2 injection pumps, some seals, and a whole bunch of front end suspension parts. The difference between a 3/4 and 1 ton is often an additional rear leaf in the spring, depending on the package.

If you can write off fuel expenses, find something with a ford v10. They're ass on gas but just work otherwise. By far the best of the mod motors. Produced clear through 2021 so newer ones are out there. Avoid 2008 and down.

>>28458550
the last v10s were the tritons going up to 08 tho. unless i’m missing something.

i’m about to put a deposit down on a 2019 f250 with 50k miles
