The UK and euros measure fuel mileage differently in several ways. In the 00s if you read top gear magazine you'd see cars getting 50% better mpg according to the UK even in the same spec.
The standards and test procedures have changed basically everywhere since then.
The US gallon is larger than the imperial gallon so that makes a chunk of it.
Nobody likes cars geared for fuel economy so they aren't really made often.
People seem to want heavier cars and think small is dangerous.

Because that doesn't make money, the A2 was very expensive in its class and the much more conventional Merc A-class handily outsold it while also being much more profitable. The BMW i3 met a very similar fate as it used a full carbon fiber tub for the sake of weight and efficiency, you'd think that a very forward thinking car like that would've done well in the EV boom but it never got a proper tech update because BMW corporate realized that half-assed pigfat landbarges with batteries hastily crammed under the hood shift a lot more units and are much, much, MUCH more profitable.

Wasn't the old Euro "NEDC" test procedure basically just simulating city driving in an extremely slow old shitbox?
Two thirds of the test cycle is made of a city driving simulation that's so slow (both in terms of speed and acceleration) you can complete it on a fucking bicycle if you're somewhat fit. It's then followed by a couple minutes of slightly faster driving and a slow acceleration to highway speed, at which point the test ends.

Aerodynamics and rolling resistance made little difference in the test, but they could strip the cars of things like side mirrors and roof rails, pump the tires well above recommended pressures, turn off AC, run economy modes nobody would ever be willing to use, etc. The allowed margin of error for measuring speed was also high enough that every test was probably driven slower than intended.
Somehow, the test was total garbage at actually simulating real driving.
It's no wonder almost every car is suddenly 20% to 30% less efficient when tested with newer procedures like the WLTP.

I remember when I was a kid and thought every car was going to eventually look like the Honda Insight because that was the wackiest looking thing. When my dad got a used one for driving to work I thought he was ahead of the game. Honestly, I wish it did at this point. A fuel efficient vehicle with an I3 that doesn't grenade itself and a 5-speed? That sounds too good to be true in the hell we live in now.
The jokes of the past really are the dreams of the future. We just don't realize it till the whole industry is a joke.

>It sold like shit because regardless of what people babble, the goy will always go for "status".
Always confused me, but it's true. Didn't hit me till I got to 30. My friends who I thought valued... value, immediately started trying to get newer, but not better cars. My friend needed help looking for a car, said he wanted a crossover for more space. I sent him some low mileage mid-00s RAV4s and CRVs. Seemed like the best option for his needs, but he insisted it had to be at max 7 years old. He ended up getting a 2018 Ford Escape with over 125k miles and it's been a headache for him, but at least it's newer.

I've been in the cell when mpg tests were done. I've run tests to ensure dyno wind tunnels correlate with real conditions according to epa policy. The duty cycycle keeps changing. And I'm sure every country around the world has their own legal mountain to climb to certify vehicles. I assume the EU being a thing saved car companies from having to durability and legal test for every country.

The 3l version had some differences compared to the already expensive base A2. It was not just a little diesel in a perfectly normal car.
>automated manual transmission
>3l only reachable in eco-mode (engine limited to 33kW (45HP) with start-stop (OP in NEDC) and no engine braking
>special lightweight rearseats, no partial folding possible
>very expensive special rims (AlMg mixture)
>extra low resistance tires
>alu suspension
>20l tank
>no AC available
>improved aero

>>28457167
The 3l version was at 0.25, same as the Insight. That's still a very good value and the frontal area is only 2.2m2 too.
