Any reason for a 850 double-pumper in this day and age?

High revving big blocks in either vintage or customs applications.
A 350c.i. only pulls about 400cfm @ 5k rpm so the sweet spot for most builds is a 485cfm carb with a 650cfm covering majority of what's left.

You have a big engine and you don't want efi
An 850 is too big for anything less than either a big block or a stroker small block. Guys will put an 850 on their stock 78 camaro and then wonder why the throttle response sucks. There's such a thing as too much carburetor.

This is why the quadrajet was always the goat. Two small primaries for quick throttle response and high intake velocities in most average driving and them two great big secondaries for when you actually need maximum power.

Quadrajunk is absolute trash. That term is used by GM fans.
What you described is called "spread bore", with primaries beeing smaller than secondaries. Most Ford applications run "square bore" which is primary and secondary sizes being basically the same.
Holley offers carbs in both styles.

The quardajet was designed for fuel economy, not performance. It is functionally absent in street, strip and track events and relegated to classes that require OEM components.

No, a 2100 Holley, Autolite, or Motorcraft is peak performance. Simple, reliable, not a shit ton of linkages and bullshit to go wrong.

Fight me.

there is no reason for anything but efi outside of "muh authentic" or "i already have the carb in it"
even cheap chinese lawnmower and scooter engines got efi now
it is better in every single way

>better in every single way.
I bought a truck from auction.
Rebuilt the carb with a $40 kit from NAPA. Took 20 minutes.
Fired up and idled with zero further adjustment.
You cant do that with EFI.
Instead youre checking OBD codes and trying to figure out if a lean miss is due to a clogged injector, MAF failure, TPS fault, bad 02 sensor etc etc etc.

You like EFI because it does everything for you. And when it fails someone else fixes it for you.

i've seen a lot of people say quadrajets are trash, but also people saying that when they're tuned right, they work really well...but it apparently needs more skill/time to tune correctly.

>spread bore and square bore
don't fucking lecture me on shit I fucking know, asshole. If I meant to say spread bore I would have fucking said it. I said a Rochester Quadrajet, which is the name of the carburetor and not just "a term GM fans use" because (for example) a Carter Thermoquad is much different despite both being spread bore.
>muh racing
good thing I'm not a racer, just a racist. In daily driver use a Quadrajet works well because, surprisingly, fuel economy is a good thing

Quadrajunk has one small fuel bowl that quickly runs dry. That's why street is fine but track is boo boo.

Honestly if you're revving a big block you might want to go with a multicarb setup, as big a pain as that is. I put a 650 on my 460 and it gets when by 4k. That's basically fine as it's an off-road oriented build and I rarely take it above 2500, but when I do a street build with a 460 (and I plan to, I'm in love with the beast) I'm going 850 even for a mild build. If the economy breaks my way and I'm going less mild then I might put 3 of them on top of the supercharger.

That term is quadrajunk.
Your reading compression is that of a first grader. 20 bucks says you're a spic in SoCal.

Touting a q-jet just because its a spread bore when holley also makes spread bores shows how retarded you are.
