I need to replace my alternator but the bolt is super seized, and I'm afraid to try and take it out because I have no idea what I'll do if I fuck it up.
What should I do?

Cry about it, do nothing, yell at the bolt for a few minutes, drink a beer, then remove it. Get some penetrating oil in it, heat it with a torch or heat gun, then just remove it.

Savage.

Soak it with PB Blaster

Let it sit 30+ mins (or overnight).

Tap lightly with hammer to help it work in.

Use proper tools

6-point socket + breaker bar

No 12-point or worn tools

Still stuck? Use heat

Heat the area around the bolt with a torch for ~30 sec

Try loosening while hot
Watch for wires/fuel lines!

If you strip/snap it

Extractor kit, weld a nut, or drill if needed

Don't panic — fixable

Huff and puff it loose.

Have you got a self-serve auto wreckers nearby? Go and remove an alternator in their yard. You can practice on a car that's not yours, and you'll have spare parts in case you fuck yours up.

Insert a wrench into any long pipe.

It will be easier.

Have you tried shooting at it?

>Slide new alternator over bolts
>Weld new nut to bolt
