What do I do with my personalized plates when I sell my car. Keep them? Give them in the sale? Do I have to submit a release or transfer for them? What happens if I don't?
>>28458313 Over this side of the pond you still own the plates the car originally came with plus the personalized ones and you can just transfer the old plates back. Sounds reasonable to me.
>>28458326 You own both sets of plates but only one can be on the car. You can even buy and sell existing plates and register them to whatever vehicle you choose. You own the plate the car does not.
>>28458326 They sort of layer on top of each other. You'd have your personal number plate on something called a retention certificate which entitles you to then assign that plate to an already registered car. When you assign the number plate, your personalised one is applied to the car, the original plate won't be registered to the car unless you place the personalised plate back onto a retention certificate and then it will be reverted to the previous registration. It makes sense if you swap plates around a lot.
>>28458084 (OP) Just turn your IMTRANS plate into the DMV and they'll give you some money back. Don't sell it with the car or you will get traffic camera tickets and toll road fees in the mail.

>>28458484 i mean maybe after jumping through 28 hoops and mailing 12 notarized documents you can convince them, but wouldn't it be easier to just not have to risk it in the first place?
>>28458582 Technically, the DVLA own all the number plates, they have been known to recall ones that are offensive and use this as a means to do so.
English number plates are a big business, lots of people buy and sell them, so it's more common than you'd think. Aston Martin swap their plates "AML 1", "1 AML", "V12 AML" around their press fleet on an almost daily basis, often quicker than the DVLA website can update.
