Why are normies so incapable of maintaining their cars? People can hardly change their oil at reasonable intervals, never mind change their coolant, ATF, grease components etc. Basically any car not owned by a boomer is a total gamble on whether or not it’s 100K mi overdue on basic fluids. Can’t even look to new cars as a way to avoid this since they’re total garbage.

Because things are not painful enough yet.

The normie treats everything as disposable. His body, his relationships, his housing... So why not a car also?

Why learn how to take care of the car? It's probably debtMAXX'd at 29%APR until the WARRANTY runs out. If something breaks its "under wArrAnTY"

The truth is these kinds of people and kinds of thinking only exist when things are easy. If car prices suddenly rose to $1,000,000 overnight the party can't go on. Anyone who has one would baby the shit out of it to make it last. Probably wound not be able to afford to finance another one also.

Mechanics are doing a good job with gatekeeping their trade. They make basic maintenance seem cryptic and complicated to deter you.
Also in general there are high risks associated with fucking up.
Only reason I started wrenching is because almost everytime I'd take my car or bike to a shop there would be something wrong with it (engine cover rattling, misaligned chain, etc...).
Tools are expensive and you're fucked if you don't have a garage or driveway.

Are all of you fucking retarded? Mechanics gatekeeping stuff on a car they didn't make and have ZERO input on how its made?

Sounds like you're a bunch of jerkoffs upset mechanics charge appropriately for having the tools and knowledge to complete the job quickly while you have no fucking idea what to do and are too scared to find the correct bolt to spin.

Same with the ZF8 in the Challenger. I tried to get it done at the 60K service but the dealer fought me tooth and nail so it's still not done because now I've gotta find an independent shop that's worth a shit and that's not so easy to do.

Modern transmissions' fluid changes are bullshit, they need special software, a full post lift, and are still somehow too dumb to calculate "you didn't put enough in, add 50ml" or "you put too much in, siphon out 50ml" and instead expect you to just redo the whole procedure. It's ridiculous that you can't just drain, fill, and go like with engine oil

$40 labor for an oil change is pretty based, at least at the dealer because the car is lifted into the air and you get inspected for anything else fucked up, as expensive as service is, it's still making more sense to fix a vehicle as long as it still runs and isn't rusting to bits, but the problem is like >>28459582 said, as long as they can kinda sorta swing a car payment every 7 years to get another car, it doesn't make sense for them to fix anything, the real struggle happens when the economy collapses, and the debt subsidized "middle class" can no longer borrow money to be middle class, and are basically stuck having to maintain what they've got.

Everything is seen in terms of monthly payments. If it isn't included in that budget then it's a financial burden for most people.

$100 for an oil change when the cats runs just fine? That's almost a third of the cost of the car! (When viewed in terms of a monthly expense)

Once you realize this you'll understand how people are poor in America.

This, it's also a short sighted mindset that's an epidemic among a massive chunk of the population, they live life a month at a time, they're not thinking "where do I wanna be over 30 years from now", they think "well the car fits in my monthly budget, so it's good" and they're perfectly content buying brand new economy cars that implode in value and repeat the process their entire lives.

Most people are straight up pound foolish when it comes to cars, they will spend a dollar buying a brand new car to save a nickel as long as they don't have to fix brakes and suspension on a car with miles on it to keep it going for another long while. and not have massive amounts of depreciation on what is basically an appliance car.

Don't mind him anon, he'll probably crash due to lack of brakes or some suspension shit like a ball joint failing and his car falls on the floor at 70 mph, that's the thing about cats, stuff totally works, until it doesn't totally work and you just did more damage crashing, overheating, or otherwise ruining the car in some fucked up way when he could've maintained the fluids and whatever else, and been problem free.

this.

>>28459564 (OP)
imagine you're a city slicker who lives in an apartment and owns 3(three) screwdrivers, total, and you're thinking that maybe you should change your oil yourself

you don't have any tools, in fact you don't even know exactly what you need. you're vaguely aware that the process involves a wrench (or several?) and you should probably try to look for a service manual of some sort. but when you try to find it, you're greeted by infinity SEO sites with hazy screenshots of russian pdfs that are asking for 30-50bucks for what they promise is an actual manual

so then you try youtube, and some soiboi shows the process(after advertising liquid molly and asking you to subscribe), but he has a fucking 2 post lift and a liquid catcher and 7 cabinets full of tools. he shows you the appropriate wrenches and sockets and extensions and what oil filter you need, but where the fuck do you even get those things and how much do they cost? do they come in a set? how much is that?
then he tells you home many footpounds/Nm to torque the drain and the filter and the cap with, so now you realize that aside from all the rest, you also need a special torque wrench, which apparently is a thing

so you do some prelim research and some math and you realize that between buying the jacks and stands, buying the sockets, buying the torque wrench and the manuals, you're basically looking at 200-300+ just to do this fucking oil change

and then you realize that you also don't have the space, unless you're willing to do all this stuff in your apt. garage or out on the street(you're not), you don't have any clothes you're willing to get dirty(how hard is it to get engine oil out of some levis? will it fuck up the washing machine?), you don't know what the fuck to do with the old oil and oil filter (probably a not a good idea to dump them in the shitter?)

so, in the end, you call the dealership.
