Given the rumor that Toyota isn't working with Subaru anymore for the next gen GR86 and they have a partnership with Mazda already, what are the chances they choose Mazda instead and the Miata becomes the GR86 twin? We could finally have the Miata coupe everyone always pines after, and the GR86 could have the two main problems everyone hates (boxer engine, mcdonalds front suspension) fixed.

Monkey's paw. We get a Miata coupe, but it has McDonald's suspension. This isn't happening unless it coincides with a new generation Miata releasing.

Good news, the ND is 10 years old this year and it's most recent 2024 ND3 facelift will likely last 4 or so years like previous ones have, around the same time the rumor says a new GR86 could be revealed (2028).

Also the GR86's front suspension is entirely a Subaru design (shares parts with the older Impreza) so I don't see why they'd keep it.

Yep. And the main reason Subaru uses McPherson is because boxer engines are wide and you physically can't fit anything else in the little space it leaves for suspension. If they go for a straight four
or three
, they'll have little reason to retain it.

Fuuuuuuck that. Mazda's putting a low compression 2.4 in the next Miata, get that and throw a turbo on it.

Keep coping, the truth is non-mcdonlads is a premium option, Miata is literally smaller in every dimension and they put bones in it. Why do you think it costs more?

Didn't they already try that with the Fiat spider? It was a more attractive Miata (with a higher price tag) that is no longer in production.

I wouldn't mind a Miata engine in the next iteration of the GR86. As long as its a cheap and fun platform thats well built, why not? I cannot imagine however Subaru using anything but their boxer-4 engine in any of their cars however.

No, that was still a convertible. It also used a shittier Fiat engine. The Miata was the better choice for less money.

I didn't know they used a Fiat engine, I assume it just had slightly more power to justify the $10k price increase?

Still, they make hard top coupe miata's today. Why would a Miata that starts at $30-35k want to compete with a GR86 that starts at $32-38k other than parts production cost sharing for both companies? I think thats my confusion from OP; they already make a Miata coupe, so why are people pining after it?

Not really, the RF is close but it's still a targa top with the powered mechanism to move the targa panel and C pillar structure, and all the weight, cost, complexity, and reduced structural rigidity that comes with that. I think a lot of people would prefer a fixed roof like the 179 JDM NB coupes they made that would weigh less, cost less, be more reliable, and be more rigid: all things Miata owners tend to care about.

A folding retractable hard top is not the same thing as a coupe, retard-kun.

Would you rather have a 2 liter Mazda engine with 158 horsepower or a 1.4 liter turbocharged Fiat with 160 horsepower? It was never about the Fiat being better or more powerful, it was about trying to position Fiat as a more upscale brand. That's why it failed.

Pic related, the NB Coupe they denied the US despite bothering to spend the money to engineer it and tool up to produce them.

Given Toyotas history of partnering with the worst companies possible, Subaru, BMW, etc it wouldn't surprise me if they went with Mazda. Now just imagine if they partnered with an actually competent company like GM. Imagine a mini Alpha platform or a modern Sky/Solstice with half the C8's new DOHC V8.

Nah, bring back the rotary. The GR86 crowd is already already used to grenading motors. At least rotaries like being abused on the track and are small enough to rebuild on your kitchen counter.

Put a 3ur in a Miata, keep it under $50k with a clutch pedal, and I'm in. Won't happen so I'll be out, but those are my terms.

They (partly) own Subaru. And if you follow the timeline you can see why the sti was killed in replace for their own proprietary manual only, "rally" timebomb shitbox.
