I spent a year with a Vespa as my only transportation. Was in the South so didn't worry about cold, but got rained on a lot. Have motorcycle now, better than scooter.

If you're bike-only in socal you need two things: Locking hard luggage, and a pedal bicycle for little shit around town. I can fit a week's groceries into 30L total of storage. You make it sound like hell on earth instead of a mild inconvenience mixed with mild perks.
