Is this worth the hassle buying if there are no maintenance records but it's under 75k miles?

Depends how much it is, but I'd rather go for an M113 V8 equipped SL500 over an early M273 V8 SL550 since some of the early engines are known to suffer from timing chain issues. I think it's some time in '08 that they were bulletproofed from the factory. M113s are basically bulletproof, on the other hand.
Unless you're purely looking for a croozer I'd try to stretch for an M113K equipped SL55 over either of those.

Yeah I honestly think the SL65 would be pretty cool, and it's apparently bulletproof (the big v12 engine, still the same suspension problems) but they're out of my range.
