the secret to toyota's reputation for engine reliability is that their engines are all comically underpowered, and this car is no exception
it also just looks bad and overstyled, like a civic type r from the 2000s

I like it. Very fun to drive and not really as slow as people make out. Handles great and honestly has tons of cargo room, more than most cars, so its very practical.
Shit's dirt cheap just because its underrated. Should have gotten a bigger aftermarket but the owners were always too down on it. Can be boosted pretty good.
People who blame it for the end of the gt4 are retarded, the reason there was no gen 7 gt4 is because of all the cheating done with the gen 6.

Assuming you're american its probably because they sold way more 1zz celicas, and neither car was that popular to begin with. The other cars with it were even more niche.
1zz actually had more issues, particularly pre 2003. After that its not bad.
In my country they only sold the 2zz and they're not very rare.

The 2ZZs weren't built for abuse and even though they did sell more 1ZZ cars, the amount of 2ZZ cars on the road has dropped every year to the point that they're nearly extinct on the road.

Like I said, I see more 1ZZ MR2 Spyders on the road and for sale. More Lancer Ralliarts and SVT Focus even. Whenever I do see Celica GTSs for sale theyre either automatic or need a engine.

FWD. I don't hate it but as with the Scion TC which followed in its footsteps its separated from greatness by front wheel drive.

I'm fine with the engine being meh so long as its reliable and tunable; but there's no fixing FWD.

140hp in most trims. Corolla-based platform with ricey bodywork. Transmission is more fragile than the RAV4 and Camry boxes that shipped in the same year. FWD-only, AWD was dropped.
The 180hp trim has the 1.8L 2ZZ-GE, which explodes its oil pump if you rev it out too much, and has much less tuning potential than a B18 or K20 due to low displacement and undersquare design.

Theres no winning with this car.

this is all mostly false. i wonder if celica haters are just criminally misinformed. there are 3-4 trims. the GT (shit), GT-S (decent), GT-S tsunami edition if you count body kits as a separate trim, and the TRD edition which was pretty rare. the GT was total shit. it should have never been made. it was underpowered, commonly came in automatic only, and before 2003 they had an issue with burning oil due to incorrect piston ring specs from the factory. the transmissions are rock solid. for manuals, the gearboxes are very durable too. the oil pump gears only explode if you downshift at a stupid high RPM (forced over-rev), and only the pump gears blow. this cannot happen from normal revving. it's pretty typical for owners who track their cars to replace the pump gears because of this. the tuning potential is very high but it's sketchy as the motor has a nearly 12:1 compression ratio. i personally would never put any boost on it.

your only valid points were low tuning potential and fwd being the only option.
