Thinking of getting one. Is there something I should watch out about these? I like it's looks and that it's a hardtop.

Neglectful owners at this age. I've seen a few roached out, clapped low mileage examples trying to be flipped straight from auctions. I've seen a few clean examples that have been owned by the same owner for decades, as well. It's easier to find those in any coastal area (salt notwithstanding).
I haven't personally owned one yet, but I've been looking at them for a few years. Barely weighs more than a Miata/Z3 despite the hardtop, has double wishies front + multilink rear, available manual transmission and supercharged I4 or supercharged V6, they're not a terrible package if you get past it's frumpier looks which I guess you already have. Monoblocks and AMG-optioned bumpers definitely help. The drivetrains, shared across other MB models have already proven themselves to be reliable. Just expect to do some upkeep on the rooftop mechanism if you plan on regularly using it.

i don't know anything specific, but in general

by all means, do your own research, just understand that owning an old car from an expensive brand is not going to be cheap or easy, even if its cheap to buy it

I think it's cool. I was thinking about getting one, but not sure how different the experience would be from my SL500 (R129). And I don't see the point of having it if I don't track it.

Get a Chrysler Crossfire instead. It's mechanically identical aside from the optional manual transmission, but the lack of Mercedes name recognition means you'll get it for cheaper.
