In this old 1999 Top Gear episode they showed the old Toyota Starlet and then reviewed it's successor the Yaris. Then they compared the Yaris to it's rivals Fiat Punto, VW Polo, Peugeot 206, Renault Clio and the Ford Fiesta. And in typical old Top Gear fashion they shat on the Japanese car and chose the Clio and the 206. But when you look at what happened to those cars.
>Starlet is still on the road in 2025
>Yaris scrapped in 2017 with 160K miles
>Polo scrapped in 2014 with 100K miles
>Fiesta scrapped in 2012 with 100K miles
>Clio scrapped in 2012 with 70K miles
>Punto scrapped in 2011 with 110K miles
>206 scrapped in 2007 with 90K miles
The two Toyota's were the most reliable out of all the cars with one of them still being on the road. While none of the Europeans made it to 120K miles. Why are the Japanese so much more superior to others?

Westerners tend to have a superiority complex towards Japanese stuff.

Japanese has autistic levels of attention to quality assurance. They are firm believers that quality doesn't exist without durability. Just look at Game Boy devices from the 80's that still work fine today. Not only that but like other WW2 nations, Japan developed good knowledge in ICE and were able to transfer knowledge to their commercial lines.

Westerners simply don't have the same devotion to enduring quality. We value speed, acceleration, fun and so on but for Japanese a product that breaks down is shamefur dispray. They can be devoted to this line of thinking that would make most westerners miserable. Also Japanese generally put in more work hours for the same pay as us or even lower.

Americans beat the living daylights out of their cars and so simplicity and ease of repair and assembly tends to be preferred over long term durability.

Not really they rust easily and their american tier interiors brake just as easily. Cars last long because they're purposely underpowered. Repairs can be cheap but again if you aren't on top of maintenance it'll turn to rust dust as quickly as a ford would.
TLDR Unless you bought it new it's just as much of a restoration project as any other used car is.

in what way are american cars easier to repair? everything is exponentially harder, for example to change a fuel pump on a ford taurus or chevy cavalier you need to drop the entire fuel tank, that's retarded as FUCK. wheras mitsubishi lancers, corollas, subarus, and hondas of the same era you can just open the back seat up and pull them out.

Which is why you made Toyota the biggest car company in the world since their cars are durable and easy to repair.
