Between all of the hustle bro influencers and scammers now I honestly can't tell if there's any profit to be made flipping cars. I'm not talking about buying any piece of shit from copart and trying to get lucky, I mean investing in a dealer license to bid at auction mid-range cars to resell at enough profit to pay my bills while driving cars I love in the time between buying and reselling them. Is this a pipe dream? Or a decent investment? Not trying to be a millionaire, just want to do something I enjoy.

Yeah hence the reason I called those people out in the first sentence of my post, I don't want to scam people. Asking if there's a way to make legitimate money working with the things that I love.

Then you may as well become a used car dealer with a small lot and several CUV's for normies and the cars you want as the ones to generate interest. Small lots that have some interesting cars around do get attention but not enough to pay the bills. That's what the CUV's are for. Work on getting some sort of financing arrangement where you get a piece of the action too.

Most "side hustles" (retarded normgroid term) are a massive waste of time that will net you an extra couple thousand a month at most. and that's IF you manage to actually make it work and happen to be good at the actual work involved (in this case, fixing cars profitably). maybe you'll make money but you'll have to decide if it's worth the investment in time.

You'd probably be better off just learning some skills or getting some certification that can increase your salary at your full-time job. You DO have a full-time job, right anon?
A side business is only worthwhile if it can scale. Flipping cars does not scale.

Look up how many cars an individual can sell per year in your state. Some only allow two if you don't have a dealer's license.

you need a dealer's license to flip more than a couple times in a certain timeframe.

Rent seeking should be punishable by death.
It is an even worse form of theft.

HAHAHA! M8 if you subtract the money you spent on the car plus repairs (yes you will have to make some repairs yourself) you'll be making a meager 100 dollars per car at best not to mention you have to wait for someone to even buy it. Everyone I see attempt this ends up giving up after they realize they'd make money faster working a part time job. Fixing a selling cars is not a career or even a side job unless you're a youtuber it's borderline community service.

making actual money from it is a pipe dream.
if you already have the equipment and know-how, and you also understand the market, you can probably make a little money, but its not a lot, especially on a per hour invested basis.

but it is a good way to enjoy cars you couldn't actually afford otherwise.
buy fked car -> fix it -> drive it for a while -> sell it for break even/small profit -> repeat
you won't get rich, but it'll not bankrupt you either.

oh, and if you do end up doing this, the best way to actually make money from it is to become a yootoober as well. if you're decently charismatic that is.

Yes, but chances are you will be forced to get a car dealership license in most states. For example, my state requires someone to get a car dealer business license if they sell more than five cars per year. In order to hold such a license, you'll have to cover all kinds of fees including environmental pollution fees. So your conceptualized profit from flipping cars will be less than you think after all those business costs.

There are people who do that. Most states will require you to be a licensed car dealer.

Yes I know, that was in the OP. The question is if there's any money to be made from doing things that way, this thread has just as much conflicting information as anywhere else I've looked.

It costs money to make money. You can do it, just have about $100,000 in reserve to meet all the legal fees, taxes, insurance, rental, utilities, record keeping expenses, and so forth.
Had a bad month? Didn't make many sales?
Fuck you. Pay me.

Not OP but I too was interested in car flipping. But rather than bidding low selling high immediately, I'd buy dilapidated cars and bring life back into them before selling the car for a mark up. I got a decent amount of cash on-hand and space at home to do repairs and believe I could potentially grow this operation into a fully fledged business if things go well.

Anyone got advice on this?

It used to be worth it back when people would sell cars for less than they were worth in parking lots, and in the craigslist days. Now people have marketplace on refresh all the time, and people want 2K minimum for their non-running, rusted to shit 20 year old Buick Century or Honda Accord. Unless you're comfortable driving around aimlessly looking for cars that haven't moved in a while in peoples yards, just to have a nog or a tweaker threaten to shoot you for asking about their car, you're not going to find anything.
