Well I figure it's mostly a problem of going from somewhere with basically no winter at all, to somewhere with very long winters that dumps snow and ice.

If you have already made it this far in a sonic then evidently God has plans for you and you cannot falter

Get a second set of wheels with snow tires, an ice scraper or de-ice spray, maybe tirechains and you're set

Bro you might need to drive over a cattle guard some time. You need at least a half ton truck with 4x4. Ideally you’d want a three quarter ton, but a 4x4 half ton will do.

FWD is good in snow. You could consider getting an AWD hybrid or something.

A 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid is something to look at. They're not very expensive.

At minimum you need an F650 to not get swallowed by a dirt trap, slip off the road of ice and snow, or laughed out of the saloon by the local girls. F750 will do you better and if you rock in with some chuckle fuck soft hands F350 or lower you might as well get a bumper sticker that says “follow me home to peg me” because you’ll be the faggot laugh of the town

I drove through Montana in late fall in a sedan without issues. In winter you likely need to just wait for roads to be cleaned before going out unless you get studded tires. At the very least you'll need snow tires, and just avoid mountain passes during winter.

Snow tires, also you will learn what roads are clear at what time of the year. Many roads in the west are just closed during winter because it's financially unreasonable to keep plowing the snow off of them.
In cities they plow and salt.

So you want to live in Montana?
I hope you know, in Montana, there is no electricity. you have to chop your own firewood everyday to cook with and to heat your cabin. also you will have to fight with grizzly bears constantly.

You're confusing Montana with B.C.
Americans have it so lush south of the border, you don't even know real winter hardships.
