Pretty fucked already if that's your method. I just trawled FB Marketplace, Craigslist and Auto Trader until I found the clean, one owner GMT800 that I've had for a few years now (that only cost me a few grand). Get an idea for what you want, first, and narrow some models down. Assuming you're actually talking "SUV" when you say SUV, I'd start with GM GMT800 and GMT900 SUVs, 3rd and 4th gen 4Runners, Nissan Xterras, 1st gen Mercedes MLs, and hell, even the 1st generation Kia Sportage if you can find any cheap. Those are all proper SUVs, all body on frame, and with variants in auto/manual, AWD/4x4, high-low transfer cases, locking diffs and so on (obviously not on every car)
If it turns out you don't actually need a full-on SUV, then a 1st or 2nd gen RAV4 or CR-V. They stopped being cool when they stopped throwing the spare tire on the back and started lowering the bumpers to the floor (to gain MPG at the cost of a semblance of off road ability)
