Planning to do the Pan American Highway starting in 2026. Going with a diesel truck i've been fixing up to be part camper. Does anyone have experience with crossing the darien gap? Should I just ship my car around it and pass on figuring it out logistically?

Do not attempt to drive through the darien gap. There are no actual roads and lots of criminals.

This is true. You’ll need to pay a ferry to take it across. You can google that if you don’t believe it.

The bottom of South America does seem like a good place to be considering all that.

This.
You literally CANT drive a truck across it. Its physically impossible. You actually can't even get a dirt bike through. Any goat path that exists today will be gone after the next rain.

People generally ship their cars around it.

In the early 60's, some guys drove across in a trio or Corvairs with a few support vehicles. It took them three months with an average of less than a mile per day. Here's a Road & Rack article about it: https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a36177863/corvairs-in-the-jungle-of-death/

For the article, they talked with a Norwegian guy who did it by motorbike in the late 80's. Interesting parts:

> Pedersen was gobsmacked by Chevy’s effort. “I can’t even imagine it,” he said. “I can’t see these people going up and down those hills. It must have been brutal.” The Norwegian relayed anecdotes from his own trip, which contradict the squeaky-clean Chevy footage. One night Pedersen’s companion picked more than 150 ticks off his own body. Then there were the scorpions, the broken hand, the swollen and septic leg, and the constant scares from Africanized killer bees, which gave him nightmares.

> ... Pedersen isn’t convinced the Corvairs did much driving at all—more likely they were pushed, hauled, winched, pulled, and otherwise dragged nearly every inch of the way through that godforsaken jungle, he says.

I love that the warning sounds straight out of a movie
>hey I was thinking about doing this panam trip.... blah blah.... any advice?
over a montage of sights and tourist brochures
old grizzled panamanian says in a thick accent
>Do not attempt to drive tru da darien gap, señor. You weel not make eet.
>protag gives a scoff
and the title card (DARIEN GAP) plays as it cuts to a depiction of something hostile happening in the background, like some cartel members about to go after someone in a wrecked truck.

I don't get it, why hasn't any country tried to make a road through it?

Brazilian trans are also fine. South Americans at least try to actually be feminine while North American trans are just weird abominations, and usually mentally ill.

Skip Panama and Colombia entirely.
Some Mexico at your own risk.
The rest is possible but challenging
My godfather did it from tierra del fuego up to colombia, then with a ferry up to costa rica and abandoned near mexico df. Late 60s willys

Is the Darien gap actually passable? If I recall correctly, you have to take a ferry, since the jungle is so dense it is the only part of the Pan American Highway that hasn't been built.
