they're really good. undesquare and decent displacement makes them good in a half ton, they get really good mileage, a calvan insert isnt expensive or complicated if you need it, and the V10 exists which is good enough for a 3/4 ton. the electronics fucking suck, coil packs die left and right, coolant pipe under the intake explodes if you look at it wrong, theyre backed by the laziest clunkiest transmissions in existence, the gauge cluster is an estimation at best, not even the speedometer is accurate with stock tires, the trucks look like shit and rust faster than a toyota in Michigan, and they dont make as much power as a 5.3 and a 6.0 mops the floor with the V10

Yes, but people have figured out ways to keep them alive, so not all hope is lost. I have been living with a 2004 5.4 3v Lariat for over seven years, which is longer than my ex-wife stayed faithful, so I'd say if you can tolerate a woman, you can tolerate a Triton. The Triton is slightly less emotional than the women.

I think early ones were more troublesome but I have the triton in an 09 screw4x4 I’ve owned for 130,000 miles and with 155k on the odometer, no issues with the engine at all.
Changed the plugs myself at 105k miles, none broke. Oil changes between 4-5k miles using Mobil 5w-20 and no problems there.
Overall I’ve been pretty damned happy with it.

Never post again. The most swapped engines are GM 3rd/4th gen small blocks out of trucks.

I'm honestly surprised it's not more popular. The v10 triton is still out there and they all sufferer from the same issues, so nobody goes after them.

The V10 is huge as fuck and doesn't fit into shit like a "LS" will. A V10 small block that's the size of a V8 big block makes no sense. That and the aftermarket for it is non-existent.

It's ok. Meh mpg, meh power, requires expensive motorcrap for critical parts (coils, plugs, timing system ESPECIALLY phasers, various sensors, etc) because aftermarket ones are universally crap, but it'll keep running as long as you change the oil at a reasonable interval (use 5w30) and use oem parts where absolutely required (except the oil pump, install a m360hv asap).

>I've heard you need to change the oil every 3k miles.
>How reliable has it been?
At first I did some UOA but it was more trouble than it's worth for me on one vehicle. I deal with statistical data and chemistry but this seemed like a waste of time to me.
But yeah I"m not super nitpicky about the mileage, it holds like 9 quarts with a filter change so that's a lot of oil volume and I had no real concerns stretching it to 6k miles.
I've had no engine related problems at all. Literally zero.
A/C compressor went out, fan resistor went out, ABS control module needed rebuilding, 4wd solenoid went out. Other than maintenance/consumables I havent replaced anything else.
Not gonna lie, it's probably been the most reliable vehicle I've owned and with the most mileage driven.
I'd buy another but it would be a v-8 not a turbo engine.

"much less" is one of the biggest understatements of all time here.
The magnum ran for 9 years, 94 to 03, and by all accounts had sales figures in the low/mid 10ks (can't find a definitive answer unfortunately). In contrast the triton went from 97 to TWENTY FUCKING TWENTY ONE which is 24 years and sold well over ONE MILLION UNITS (most being in medium duty trucks of course), yet as stated there is literally not one performance part for these that isn't custom built made to order or just a 5.4 part, despite being available for 2.5x longer and outselling the magnum ostensibly no less than 20:1.

if you want one for a project the 8.0 is also cheaper to obtain from places like car-part or lkq, bolts up to everything chrysler under the sun like a 727 or TKOs, anything you can get for a sbm, ive never seen someone do it but it's on the table

a Viper 8.0 isnt even that expensive either, but those are radically different

2v are gud and go for over 200k. 3vs won't make it to 160k before they jump time. They'll drop the chain guides in the pan and run for a while with the timing chain slapping the heads then one day jump time. Most shops won't even do a cam phaser and timing chain replacement once past a certain amount of miles even if it is in time and has no codes. They all tuned me down at 140k for cam phaser replacement despite having no issues or codes. Just the same phaser tick its made since shortly after it was bought brand new. When I had my reman engine put in I pulled the timing cover on my old "good" engine. All but one guide was sitting in the pan and the chain had chewed up the head. What a POS engine.

There is literally no difference in the block and rotating assembly between the 2v and 3v version of any mod motor (4v too but they have forged internals so technically different), it's all in the heads and their components (talking about the longblock only). All heads of any valve count and their related parts are interchangeable too so can mix and match them (actually heads won't work between the v8 and v10 obviously but components will). Also the v10 never came with vvt so never had phasers which is arguably the biggest failure point of the 3v, and the plug blowout problem was with 2v heads.

I've always heard the 2v ones are the ones you want because they are more reliable. Have a V10 in a Crewcab cab and chassis with a 9' flatbed on it that gets flogged on and it has almost 240k miles on it now.
