I have just discovered that my car is very comfy at night with the heater on, and idling the engine isn't that expensive. Is there any reason I shouldn't go camping in my car, watch the night sky through my sunroof, and leave the engine running overnight and a CO detector just in case?
Cheaper than a motel and comfier and easier than camping

I've camped a bunch in cars. Hatches/wagons are great. A running engine with alcohol can be an issue but you're just as likety to see a cop as a mugger.
Go for it.

Because if they let one person do it then every junkie bum would be living in a car on the side of the road.

I look it up online and redditors are like oh no you will definitely die of carbon monoxide poisoning because it's all going to hang around your car because you're not driving. Is there truth to this or is it busriding redditors getting their panties in a twist?

Is this some east coast problem? round here you can just drive onto any BLM land and camp, it’s explicitly allowed.

I unironically don't see a problem with this so long as they stay in the car and dont cluster together. Punish the ones being disruptive faggots not the singular one who's just chilling by himself bothering nobody.

Car camping for me is a bit like using a motel room overnight. I'd turn up at a place for a thing the evening before, find a store carpark and sleep.
I'd do the thing and either drive home tired or find another carpark to overnight in.

If it's a gas car you'll likely die of CO poisoning. Make sure you have a CO alarm but it'll probably be going off constantly.

"The gas will simply not dissipate!"
Not only wrong... fucking stupid.
There's no danger, OP. Crack a window in the car if you're very concerned but the exhaust is where the Carbon Monoxide comes from, and as you have seen if you have ever been in deep traffic, no one magically passes out from Monoxide.

Car is moving. Car isn't moving when camping. Do you even know what camping is?

Do YOU know what standstill traffic is?
Explain to me how being in a field or whatever for 4h+ is different from being in traffic for the same amount of time.
(You can't do it because you're a giant retard who doesn't understand dispersion)

The worst traffic jam I've ever been in was when they shut down the entire highway and just told cars to turn around. It was still moving at 2mph.

Yeah so why did everyone not die?
Because you are in an open space. Not a garage. Not a parking garage.
Dumb peasant.

Idling your car for excessive amounts of time damages the engine.

No, idling your GAS car damages the engine.

Same for diesel, just to a lesser extent.

Only engines I've delt with that can idle forever without issues, are natural gas engines.

Unironically, gas engines idle better nowadays. Diesels have always suffered from cylinder glazing, wet stacking, and other issues related to low combustion temperature; they just handled the idling better due to more robust construction. With DPFs and other nonsense, modern gas engines idle much better. A modern diesel needs to be run at its full operating temperature as much as possible. Anything less than that will plug your DPF, drink DEF, wreck your honing marks, eat your cat, etc. A natural gas engine is basically just a gasser with a different fuel system, they're just optimized for extended idling.
