The thing is however, modern cars are useless in their base trims. Tiny 4 pot engines pushing a large metal container have no appeal, unless loaded up with the optional hybrid powertrain + semi-autonomous driving system + leather seats with premium sound system + whatever other garbage you can load into it. Base models today are absolutely trash. Back in the day however, getting a base model meant getting essentially a factory lightweight with a small revvy engine and a manual transmission so you can save fuel or something. These tended to be a blast to drive as well, despite being unimpressive on paper.

The majority of more expensive cars sold are leased fleet vehicles optimized for tax deductions (see, then it isn’t technically a subsidy) with an already set trim level for a set price. That’s it.
