One front brake looks black, the other looks brown. Does this indicate a problem on a used car? Maybe the brown one is sticky?

It's just surface rust. One caliper might have been replaced.
Heat damage would look blue.

One was replaced with a black painted caliper and the other was replaced with one that wasn't coated and has rusted as a result.

it's fine. where you don't want rust is where the piston is but that is so lubed up with grease there shouldn't be water contamination or anything else...

A good test to see if there is actually anything going on would be to do a few aggressive stops with your hands off the wheel. If it pulls hard in either direction, like the wheel quickly turn that direction, it will clue you in on which side to look at first. Also, jack the car up with the transmission in neutral and spin the wheels by hand to see if one spins easier than the other and if one is dragging.

It's more than that. The disc bell one one side is rusty; it isn't on the other. The tires are mis-matched. The wheel on one side looks in better condition than the other. It looks like someone may have rebuilt just one corner - which is never a good sign. You need to ask why

The tire in the 1st photo is different than the bottom one, and it looks like it has more tread in it, which means it's been on the car for less time.
Both the caliper and the rotor are free of rust compared to the lower one as well. Lastly, the inside of the lower wheel is coated with brake dust, while the inside of the upper wheel is not.

Put this all together and it's clear that everything there has been replaced. The brake caliper, brake rotor, wheel, and tire. The car has been in an accident, 100%. Ask them. If they can't or won't tell you what happened and what has been replaced, walk. Although personally I'd see this and walk without even bothering to ask.

the brown one will explode when you apply firm pressure to the brakes. Don't buy the car or throw the whole thing out if you already own it. Anons will troll and tell you it's fine, but this is a matter of life and death. Do not do anything with that car
