As the title says, I am asking for your help!

I am a student in the country that produces great cars north of the Alps. I'll finish my studies in a year and am looking for a car to be more mobile.

Unfortunately, I don't know jack shit about cars. Here is where you guys enter: where can I learn basic things about cars? Is there a good guide?

Additionally: I can transfer cars from Italy to my country for private reasons pretty easily. They are being slaughtered with city regulations concerning car emissions over there. So seeing that, I was wondering what a good car for the limit of five thousand Euros may look like? Any recommendations? It does not need to be small, I think sth along the lines of a five series BMW size, maybe even Kombi would be great to transport stuff from time to time! I do have mechanics that may help me fix a car up in both countries!

Thanks in advance for any help!

I heard that the old diesel engines BMW put into the e39 run for ages! There are some (good?) offers on Italian car sited like this: https://www.subito.it/auto/bmw-serie-5-e39-2000-reggio-emilia-597931527.htm

would that be sth to look into? What models of Honda or Suzuki would you recommend?

I have a jazz I'd recommend it. But a civic or accord if it fits in budget would be great too.

BMWs are fine, why punish yourself with high maintenance cost for first car? A plane will also run forever? Atleast the engines, its irrelevant. Also, skills on diesel and petrol will be a bit different. Get a petrol Honda, easy to work on.

You know why German toilets have that shelf so that the turds sit there exposed to the atmosphere until you flush? It's because krauts think their shit smells like roses.

Go ahead. Buy a BMW, or a Merc, or any other brand, so long as it's German. You deserve it.

Thanks man, I‘ll see if there are some used ones worth their money in Italy! I
think I might be able to make a steal there!

The BMW is just on my mind since I heard that the engine on these models lasts forever. I know someone (loosely) that owns one and he‘s driven 300k kms with it. I really enjoy stuff that lasts long, and I don‘t mind if it looks „shaggy, old or used“ as long as it holds up well!

I‘m not sure whether you‘re being sarcastic or not. Daily poop inspections is in line with being stuck in the anal phase as a German. What‘s so bad about looking at your poop? Sometimes it‘s a nice feeling of accomplishment!

Am I mistaken in thinking that buying a pre 2005 German car with a good engine by a reputable brand isn‘t the worst of ideas? I thought that the Italian climate might help preserve the car better! What would you recommend instead?

It‘s a trade you learn, takes three years to finish (because of schooling mostly which no one really needs in comparison to the practical learning). No getting into it, but I‘ll see if I can find some group or an old master that can teach me his ways!

Anyways, since I didn‘t get a lot of replies for my initial question (maybe because of the price limit):

What are your favourite most bang for the buck cars? What‘s a beater you really cherished driving/ have fond memories of?
